Negotiating salary and benefits in Romania

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

Better job prospects in Romania can most certainly be an incentive to leave your country of origin. Securing a contract with the right salary and benefits for you can be crucial to make your move successful.

Is salary and benefits negotiation regarded as common practice in Romania? If yes, how should you go about negotiating your package (during the hiring process, on a monthly/yearly basis...)?

What do you expect to be included in terms of benefits in your package? Which benefits do you deem necessary in Romania?

Is tax on the salary of an expat applicable in Romania or do you have to turn to tax bodies in your country of origin to pay your taxes?

Do the exchange rates of currencies impact your salary as an expat?

Looking back, are there some changes you would have made during the negotiation of your salary and benefits package?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

Mostly, Salary is negotiated as net (in hand) per month/annum. The taxes payable by the employer is the employers headache hence people only care about what they should receive end of the month/annum.
Benefits : Usually Sodexho Meal vouchers, Subscription to private healthcare (preventive checkup to MedLife, Regina Maria) should be included in the contract. Mandatory health insurance (payable to the State) is paid by the Employer. Hospitalization cover is usuually not covered .
Public hospitals are more crowded than the private ones (Public hospitals are supposed to be free, but some money is still paid in the pocket (under the table). Private healthcare centres are payable across the counter for consultation (usually 160-225 RON/consultation and if your contract covers these healthcare centres, some consultations could be covered free or with a discount (depends on the type of consultation)
