Does anyone know if there are inheritance issues if living as a married retired couple from the United States in Germany after a certain amount of time?
I know that in France if you live there over six months it is considered your domicile and you are subject to significant inheritance taxes if a spouse should die while there.
Don’t know if this is the same in Germany.

International inheritance rules are complex and you are well advised to seek professional advice by a knowledgeable lawyer!
To my (layman) understanding, the applicable inheritance law is the one of the country the deceased resided in, thus in your case German. Whether that is better or worse than your home country law, and whether some or all of this can be changd by a well-drafted will, the lawyer should be able to tell you.

Thank you!

If you are living in Germany you are unlimited inheritance tax liable in Germany.
