You may find, unless you intend working, that your husbands salary will not be enough for you to get residence here especially with a child as well.

Hi all,

My name is Jeff and I am a US citizen. I am retired and collecting two decent pensions. My wife and I are thinking of taking up long term residence in Malta a couple years from now. Reasons for choosing Malta are climate, English language, and did I say climate? I kind of like the history of Malta too.

Just looking for info on where the best places in Malta to look at for renting apartments for a retired couple around 60 years old. We like to be in the city where everything is happening but not right above a busy and noisy street corner either.

Thanks!

GozoMo

Welcome to the Forum, I would suggest you have a holiday here first and also visit Gozo before deciding to move here.

Welcome to the Forum, as regards accommodation look on the housing section on here, you could also book into a bed and breakfast place when you first arrive here then find somewhere more
permanent by looking at adverts in shop windows or speaking to people where you will be working, good luck.

No point in looking for a job at the moment as most places are closed including the airport because of the virus, with regards to working in an office you may need to speak Maltese.

Hello,

I am Dan from Florida.  My wife and I are nearing retirement and considering moving to Malta as expats next year -- especially if our upcoming election has an unfortunate result.  The information here seems very useful.  I would appreciate any recommendations regarding neighborhoods/communities, and also any to avoid (for noise, crime, cost, whatever).  We would consider Gozo.  Someone mentioned it may be kind of small, while another American was advised to consider it.  I was raised in a rural area so city life doesn't have that great an appeal.  OTOH I've never lived on a small island, so that is a real consideration.

As an aside:  after viewing the city names and unusual letter combinations, I can see where the name of our former Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, whose father's family was Maltese, came from!

Thanks to all for any input!

With regards to Gozo there is hardly any crime although probably a little more then when we moved here seven years ago, rental costs do not vary much on the island.  Places to avoid in my opinion are Marsalforn and Xlendi as too many tourists.  We live in Victoria the capital of Gozo which we find
convenient for the shops as we do not have a car and fairly quiet, as no where is that quiet here because of building work going on.   I personally would prefer Florida with the lovely beaches especially
Siesta Key area.

Would happily swap places with you, Gozo for Florida, around Siesta key or Venice as Gozomo said, but US will not allow us to retire there! Hope you are allowed to take up residence in Malta, if so then Gozo is quieter and more relaxing with rents generally cheaper than Malta.
Good Luck.

Hi

My name is Claudette. I am actually Maltese but have been living in England for the last 15 odd years.  Me and my husband are hoping to return to Malta in the next couple of years. Quite scary to uproot everything and there is so much to do!!

One thing I am really not looking forward is looking for property. It is so expensive in Malta - which is ridiculous for what you get!!!

Cheers

Hello,

I currently live in the US and recently retired.  I am exploring the idea of retiring in Malta. My wife is still working as a nurse. I haven't researched if she can transfer her US nursing license and would like to know if there is someone who has found work as a nurse in Malta after coming from another country.  From what I have read, my pension would allow us to live comfortably in the event she has trouble securing employment.  (We are both in our mid-50's) It is so hard to gauge from reading articles, how much rentals, housing and condo's cost. I realize that it depends on location. I would like to hear from other retiree's what their monthly cost of living is.  The plan is to visit late summer and look around (depending on when Covid restrictions are lifted).  Would also like to know how others navigated the paperwork required by Malta.   Thanks!  Terry

At the moment it’s not a good time to be looking for jobs as there are plenty of people here who at the moment do not have work because of the virus.

Hello everyone! :-)

I am Elina from France, considering the idea of moving to Malta in order to spend at least a year there.

I would love to get in touch with expats from all origins, particularly parents:

I am considering the option of a private school in Sliema...
If some parents out there have some real life advice about schools, I would highly appreciate the feedback!

By the way, I have read that Sliema and the surrounding area has become quite expensive (for rent) and that the air had turned quite polluted due to anarchic constructions.
Is that true?
How would you rate the quality of life in Sliema and around?

I am mostly seeking a pleasurable life experience to upgrade our quality of life.

What do you think?

Thank you!!

GozoMo

Why not come over for a holiday before deciding to spend a year here.

Eliane20

Hello!

Thanks for your answer.

Yes indeed, that's what we're about to do:
We're coming to Malta to spend a couple of weeks this month!

We are intending to explore the several areas, visit schools and hopefully make contacts.

Would like to visit Gozo as well!

GozoMo

Gozo is quieter, there isn’t an International school here just the normal village schools .

Arslan Mehar

I am Arslan 22 years old I am from pakistan and living in spain with relatives but I am planning to move in Malta because I like to work there and wants to get residenc I stay in cyprus 3 years and i can travel easily all in Europe with temporary residence of cyprus but it's just for travel, i want to work in Malta and get citizenship there i need good job i have experience of many things

GozoMo

Welcome to the Forum, with regards to finding work here there are not so many vacancies especially
in the hospitality section due to the virus, with regards to citizenship to obtain this without Maltese ancestry costs a lot of money.

You have already put this post on here, this is not a recruitment forum, only you can find work by looking at the vacancy ads, at the moment because of the virus there are a shortage of positions particularly in the hospitality section.

Hi everyone,

I will Adeline from Singapore. Recently moved in Malta with my 2 young kids to join my hubby who was seconded here to work. We are staying at Naxaar area to be nearer to the schools. Had wanted to stay in Sliema but decided not to due to the size of the apartment for the same budget, and busy roads. Quite well settled in this quiet neighbourhood of Naxaar.

Hoping to get to know more people (esp parents with young kids) from this platform. Keen to explore this beautiful archipelago and to-do for myself (when the kids are in school) and the families during the weekends/holidays.

Good evening, I'm Alberto from Italy, I've been living in Malta for a year, restoring works of art.
I have directed church work for many churches between Malta and Gozo. i like trekking ad art.
