Birth certificate required to sign up to French health care

Post new topic

Hi all,

My partner and I moved to Paris last year and are struggling to sign him up to the French health care system (he is British, I am French).

We were asked to provide his birth certificate, which we did provide (the original), however the CPAM came back to us saying it is not valid as it doesn't have a readable stamp ("cachet"). I am not sure what that's about... Maybe someone here has been in the same situation?

What sort of document can we provide?
Do we need to request a copy from the UK government?

Thank you in advance!

Bonsoir Lorène,

Je pense que vous pouvez demander un duplicata au gouvernement britannique, mais cela peut vous coûter cher.
J'ai obtenu un duplicata pour ma fille bien qu'il y ait quelque temps et je ne me souvienne plus maintenant si cela m'a coûté bien que je sois citoyen britannique.

I am in a process of getting Vital card as well. They requested a copy of birth certificate (I am an American) translated into French.  I moved to France recently from Belgium (French speaking Walonie region) where I had my American birth certificate translated officially for marriage papers.  It was not good enough for CPAM and prefecture:- it has to be done by licensed translator in FRANCE.  I used Alphatrad translation services here. Translator had some dates and reference numbers that he had hard time reading because of stamps. I gave him the information that he couldn't read from the Belgian translation.   Alphatrad just sent me the official translation two days ago. I was not able to submit it yet to CPAM and prefecture (closed due to virus), but I don't think it will be a problem when they open for business.

He needs to go to the relevant UK Government website and apply for a duplicate copy of his birth certificate. It's pretty easy to do. It's always good to have a clear copy of important documents like that.

I’ve just had to reappl for my BC from australia cost $150 including ‘courier’ $50. Then I was told I also needed my marriage certificate bc surname has changed. Another $150 and weeks waiting!

To add insult to injury they sent me 3 letters in my maiden name which I haven’t used in nearly 50 years. ALL my documents, including my French long stay visa, and my CPAM application is in my married name! I feel deeply offended.  It’s glaringly obvious which name I choose to use yet I’m completely ignored! grr
