I am a 69yr old healthy retired financially independent women. I am considering moving to Sweden to live with my British son and his Swedish wife. Will Sweden except me after leaving the EU in December. What obstacles might I encounter as to whether I will be allowed to live in Sweden permanently? I would be very grateful for any help and advise.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Non-EU citizens go to live and work in Sweden now, so I can't think of any reason why that should not continue to happen post-Brexit.

Hopefully, one of our Sweden experts will be along shortly to explain the details.  In the meantime, at the top of this webpage is a link to our Discover Sweden Guide, please read that and maybe speak to your daughter in law to see what she thinks about it.

Hope this helps.

Hello, I can't see any direct obstacle and your daughter in law is a Swedish citizen is a clear advantage too. As far as I can see it you will be fine with this move. But there are some papers to fill and a bureaucratic path to take, for instance following

Hi. Thank you so much for your reply. I will sit and read through the link now. My son has lived and work paying taxes in Sweden for 12 years so hopefully that will help.. As I am retired and have a state pension as well as a small monthly private pension, financially I should be ok. My main concern is health care which obviously I will have to contribute to and any other hidden expenses I need to take into consideration. I would be grateful for any advice. Thank you.

Since you asked for my personal advice;

If I were you I would move already now because everything will be much easier if you just come over and apply for residence permit from here.

According to the rules (Brexit) until 31 december you have exactly the same rights you had since UK joined with EU. You have enough time to sort everything out before it.

And 31/12/20 deadline is also renewable according to the Swedish government website and they also want to take into consideration to people who have already started to take their life choices based on EU rules before the Brexit, that means, whatever the process you start now as a British citizen with government of Sweden will be ended up according to the current EU rules which all are on your side.

Ask your son or daughter in law to call Swedish tax agency and find out what documents you need to have with you from the UK to avoid travelling back and forth.
As a British citizen you do not fall under travel ban according to the website of Swedish police department.

I rather wanted to post above sites in English but they have only some limited information in English.  All the best!
