Can an insurance company refuse to provide extra dental insurance?

I have fractured my tooth and will have it removed soon. I am thinking about getting a dental implant, but the year is coming to a close so I will probably do that next year. Because of the extra costs invovled I am thinking that I should get the optional extra dental cover with my health insurance company. I would like to confirm with them that this will cover the type of implant I would like to get, however I am worried that if I ring them to check then they might refuse to cover me. Does anyone know if they are allowed to refuse? Is it wise for me to ring them and check if I am covered for something I am likely to need in the immediate future before switching the insurance package?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Dutch law does not allow pre-existing conditions to be excluded from Medical Insurance policies; that said, many Insurance companies will apply an excess or a ceiling to special cover or treatment.  No harm in asking; if you don't like the answer, you can go elsewhere, there are plenty of Insurers.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

It's all about choosing the right package, in your case it will be an full dental package. No they can't refuse you. Just call them and ask for the full dental package and what the coverage will be for that.
You don't have to say that you will need dental care soon, just say you are thinking of a better coverage of your package.

I must inform you that a dental package will make your insurance more expensive, but without it it will cost you a lot more. Probably it will cost you your "eigen risico", so you would have to pay the 385 euro.

Hi Cynic and Ramses
Regarding similar query above .. I will be soon moving to Netherlands and will be subscribing for dutch health insurance for me and my family.
My wife is currently pregnant and wish to know if similar to above can pregnancy expenses be rejected by insurance with this excuse

Cynic

Hi again.

Pregnancy is included in your Health Insurance.  Dutch law does not allow the insurance companies to deny any application or block existing conditions, so it shouldn't be a concern.

Hope this helps.

You are in luck we have the best maternity care in the world and it will not cost you extra. I found a good English explanation on youtube about it. Link to video
