Planning for a Marriage Visa in Germany

Post new topic

Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year... Despite the struggle that majority of us are encountering, I hope all of you are safe.

My name is Celine, and I just move here in Bangkok 7 months ago due to work. I would like to ask if anybody here who might have the same confusion as I am facing now. My fiancée is German and I am from the Philippines and would like to get married in Germany. I understand the process that Standesamt will required me to submit dozens of documents because I came from 3rd country national. What I am confused is that, will the documents I passed on to the Standesamt will go through the process in the Philippines and the Embassy of Germany in the Philippines will do a background check on me in the Philippines, knowing I live here in Thailand already, or will the documents I passed instead be submitted to here in Embassy of Germany in Thailand since it's where I am currently living.

We consulted a Lawyer in Germany already but even the lawyer cannot give a definite answer.

I appreciate everyone's facts & opinions.

I thank you in advance to everyone who hear me out.

Stay safe.

Hi Celine,

Hope you are well.

You should be applying in the country of residence. So if your current residence is in Thailand then you should be contacting German embassy in Thailand and they will deal with your request.

Hope this helps

Hello Celine,

I am a German married with a Mexican wife.
At the time we married we were living in Malaysia.
After intense investigations we decided to fly to Las Vegas and married there (took us 24 hours and just the passports). Then used the documents from the US to register our marriage in Germany and we also did the official church marriage and wedding party with family and friends.
It was much faster and at the end I guess cheaper than taking the direct way through the German jungle of rules and legislation.

May that work for you?

Good luck
Jochen

Hi Jochen,

Thank you for reaching out. I hope you are doing well. I have reached out to the embassy of Germany here in Thailand but all they told me is that my fiancee has to reach out to the standesamt in Germany as they are the one who can give the list of documents that has to be submitted( which we are already aware of) they never answer me regarding to which embassy will my documents go, since I am aware that they will do a back ground check on me and verify my documents. As much as we both wanted to get married in NYC or Vegas or HK and even Denmark, these covid takes toll on both of us since borders are close.
I appreciate your help.

Have a great evening.

This is the Singapore forum, and not meant for discussions of Germany-specific topics.
But since I am German and married to a Singaporean, and thus have some (limited) knowledge about the topic, I will send you a PM.

@ericbernd1 Dear Jochen, thank you for this answer.  I have the same issue as Celine.  One quick question: we are marrying in Denmark, what was the procedure to have your wedding certificated certified in Germany.  What papers did you provide.  Thanks Naakie.
