Hello, my family and I are getting ready to move to DR, we are planning on using our one time mudanza  to ship our car and furniture/personal belongings. We currently live in Texas-looking for shipping companies either from Houston or Miami. Please drop any names/websites of reputable companies that do this. I am feeling pretty lost as theres not much information out there. Thank you so much in advance!

UncleBuck

On Willie Web's recommendation, I just used Montero Shipping out of Miami for importing a small pallet of welding wire.  From start to finish, I was very pleased with the service, and will use them again.  I dealt with Manuel, who communicated with me frequently and asked for address clarification ahead of time, and the price I was quoted was the price I paid, no surprises.

If the address gets deleted out, PM me for it.

Welcome to the forums.

This is a great way to get good info.

Unclebuck this is permitted.  It's a referral to a business not self promotion!  All good.

I think that more important than your shipping company is having a great customs agent to represent your interests and smooth the process once your container arrives! We used Radca Cargo and could not be happier! We received full exoneration on our household items (not a single box was opened), and we received the expected discount on import duty for our car. We had none of the nightmares with delays, broken or missing items that we’ve heard from others.

Árelis, the owner, does not speak English but her daughter handles communication with English speaking clients.

We shipped out of Miami in November.

Radca Cargo's sister company in Miami is BonTrade. Speak with Stephen Perret-Gentil.

I have also dealt with Bontero in Miami and they were very good. Highly recommend them.

Any issues will not be on the US side, shipping out is easy. What you have to concern yourself with is getting your stuff through aduanas (customs) in DR. Radca Cargo was not cheap but we did get what we paid for. No hassles whatsoever.

I have found in DR it is quite difficult getting anyone to agree to terms upfront (cost, etc) and this was especially difficult with shipping. If you have residency your household should be duty free. Be prepared to pay duty on the vehicle (18%) and the first plate or registration. That's the belly punch.

Quote just to correct.  There is no "Duty" on the vehicle if  you are using your one time residency  exemption. IT IS SALES TAX of 18% and that is NOT waived.  It will be on the assessed value here not there.

When I shipped household goods and cars.... I used a freight forwarder -

https://jadeintl.com/welcome-benchmark-customers/

The car and the furniture were in a 40ft container...
At this end , I used Hispaniola Freight.
They may be able to coordinate load for you

The advantage is the container comes to the house (Texas) and arrives in the DR

I had movers pack for me....
Hispaniola Freight handled all the incoming paperwork...everything

Cost in 2009 was less than $5000US

Whoops thanks for the correction. Also a vehicle may be valued higher here than what you paid for it in the States. I know ours was.

SayMen25

How can we know how much the car will be valued there? Is there some kind of rate/ guide we can use? How much more than the actual value in the US?

WillieWeb

They have a chart/valuation they use - regardless of your price

Mine was fair enough.....

Great, thank you for the recommendation. How does one go about having a good agent on the DR side?

madig

Thank you for the information!

Madig  - a good estimate is  25% more than you paid for it.

A good customs broker,  there are a couple mentioned above. I can add the following:

Her name is Suggey Torribio   809-861-1911 or   809-636-2954  She speaks english and  is  responsive on whatsapp as well. I use her for all my  importing here in SD.

madig

Thank you, I'll look into this company!

madig

Thank you! We have a 2018 Volvo XC90 that we plan on shipping over. Could I call before hand to get an estimate?

I wouldn't do it any other way.

Hi Willie, the name of the company who came to the house in Texas was called Jade international?

WillieWeb

No...I did it in PA but these people are national --
Yes- Jade
Your container arrives at your door...

In DR use Hispaniola.... try even starting w/ them....
Ask for Wendoline de Pena - if she's still there

Hello,

I want to thank everyone for the helpful contributions that you have provided to this expat forum.  I have learned quite a bit from the information that has been shared here.

We are planning to move to Las Terrenas in the next few months. At this time, however, we will be storing some of our furniture, household items, and other equipment in a storage facility in New Jersey.

I contacted Jade International for some information regarding the transport of the aforementioned items to the DR. The CEO of Jade replied that they could not assist with transporting "personal effects" but they could assist with the transport of our car.

Can someone recommend a moving company that could facilitate the transport of our furniture, gym equipment, car, and other household items to the DR?

Thank you for your attention.
