Hi all,

Apologies if this has been answered, but I have not been able to find a clear answer to my issue.

I am live in the UK and am married to an Italian for 8 years.  We are in the process of moving to Italy.  My wife has a job in Italy and we are purchasing a house which we are in the final process of completing.

My question is how do I get a long term visa to stay with my family?  what is the process I need to follow.  I initially thought I would go into the country with the 90 day visa for UK citizens and then once there visit the Italian authority and start my application for long stay visa based on my marriage to an Italian citizen.

If anyone knows the process would be grateful to understand what I need to do.  I am stressed now as we are only months away from moving.

Thanks everyone.

Well , you are married to an italian citizen , it is very easy to get the permit even the citizenship. You said that you have been married to an italian citizen for 8 years , the law says after three years of marriage to an italian citizen(and living together) you can request the italian citizenship. For the permit , your spuse should go to Caf or Patronato Acli , these are agencies that help you with the procedure for free, even though you jsut have to fill a form and send it to the Questura , i suggest you go to these agencies. Like I said being married for 8 years to an italian citizen helps a lot , in a few months they will give you an illimited permit to stay , and after to years of your request they will give you the citizenship. Final advice ,befarw you move to italy , take with you a certificate that demonstrates your marriage.
Good luck!

Thanks for reply.  So I understood correctly i would just travel to Italy under the short stay 90 day visa and once in Italy apply for long term one by virtue of being married to an Italian?

I dont have to apply before I leave at the UK  Italian consulate?

Thanks again

You go there to apply for permit to stay for family reasons. As an European citizen, you should be able to. Go to questura!.

No you dont need to , just get the marrage certificate before you leave UK , come to italy with your passport , when you arrive here apply for your permit(your spouse needs to apply for you). After you get the illimited permit(they will give it to you after a few months) you can easily apply to get the italian citizenship( they have to no other evaluations will be made) .

@stevewongchang ,you are wrong , UK is no longer in the EU and as of 01/01/2021 , the citizens of UK cant just come yo an EU country like before and neither can EU citizens go to UK . Dont speak of matters you dont understand , you will create a mess for someone.

Yes, in theory you should start the process within 8 days of arriving in Italy.  You will need the yellow Permesso di Soggiorno kit from the PO which you need to complete and send off.   Assuming you got married in the UK,  it would be worth having a legalised copy of your marriage certificate via Milton Keynes. If  you got married in Italy then its easier as you're already on the Italian system.   The order of things is get your PdS for 'ricongiuntimento familiare'  and then apply for citizenship.  If your wife is inscribed in the AIRE she will need to immigrate back to Italy but as you are buying a house I expect you will be taking residence in it as soon as possible.

Thank you so much Modicasa, very clear.  Thanks everyone for the responses.
