Do you need a Chinese work visa to work in a foreign embassy?

Post new topic

I'm an American living in China. I'm looking for administration-type jobs since it's my speciality and found an opening at the American embassy but was wondering do I need a work visa to be able to work there or is it a completely different set of rules? It is not a diplomat position, just an administration desk job.

I was given a resident visa but I'm blocked from getting a work visa until later this year and was thinking  I would be denied the job if I'm not able to get a Chinese work visa.

Thanks for your help in advance.

You were given a residency visa? That?s a bit unusual.  What letter is the visa classification? I?m guessing you actually got a tourist visa - L.
Anyway if you were offered a job here then the type of visa is for them to apply or help you apply for. Working visas are not something you can just apply for.  You need to be sponsored for it by an employer

My wife is Chinese so I was able to transfer my tourist visa into a foreigner residence permit. So even those who work at consulates and embassies (outside of diplomats) must have a Chinese work permit? Embassy workers are not exempt from needing such a permit?
