- parcels are becoming expensive, esp on water
- very high cost of living and building (perhaps even higher then SP). Feels a bit of a 'rich man' place.
@larkintb ...would love to know more about the area you have settled in. I have been going to the Dominican Republic (DR) for years, but have found that it has become too crowded and I can't stand the noise of all those motoconchos zipping around. Belize seems (other than it is very different culturally) by outward appearance, what the DR used to be like many years ago. Looking for a new place in the caribbean as I have become disillusioned with the DR. Would love to hear your thoughts about similarities, if you are familiar with other caribbean expat communities. I plan on visiting BZ soon. Cheers.
I am intrigued by the idea of buying land (small plot) and having a Mennonite cabin built. I am thinking...live close enough to the sea to spend a day there....but far enough away so that the mosquitoes and sand fleas don't make a meal of me every day. Has anyone had a cabin built? It sounds too good to be true for the price that I have been hearing about on YT.- @Don Karim
@Julien Hello my name is Daracia I'm currently looking into moving to Belize I very new to this. I spent some time back in June in Belize with a friend of mine in Belize City Belize. I'm trying to find how do I go about doing this in the correct way so, I don't run into any problems later. I understand Belize can be very tricky when it comes to moving there and following the guide lines set for expat. I want to rent something, but not sure about the guidelines.
Hello, family of 5 looking to move to Belize, possibly start a business. Visited twice, will be making a third visit in a few weeks hopefully!

Itinerary and New Years Eve
Hello Everyone!
I am a retired SWF from Toronto, Canada and I am seriously considering to make the move to Belize in 2023. Initially I am planning a 4 month visit to find my sweet spot, from January to April. I have been doing my reading and research and just starting to plan my itinerary and any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Places to see and visit and stay.
I will be flying into Belize City airport and would like to spend New Years Eve celebrating in Belize. Where do you recommend?
I can’t wait to start my journey to explore this wonderful country, bury my toes in the sand, soak up the sun, immerse myself in the Belizean culture, and make new Expat friends!

Hi everyone! I am a semi retired nurse, coming to Belize for my first time (from Ontario) but really hoping to stay. I will be travelling alone, and this causes lots of anxiety LOL. I plan ya arrive the beginning of December, and I believe I will be starting in Corozal. I will be researching work as well. I’d love to make contact with some people ahead of time, and see how things go from there! Please feel free to drop a line!
Welcome on board DookyD,
Thank you for your introduction.
I have read a couple of your posts on the Belize forum, have you been able to interact with members already there ?
Maybe you could send a private message to participants you've already interacted with : Best way to meet expats

Hello Everyone:
My name is Christina Jeffrey and my husband and I plan to move to Belize next year from the US. We are able to retire; however, we plan to work a W2 remote job until we can get our real estate investment company up and running. We visited San Pedro last month and will be visiting the Cayo District next year in March. We are so excited and look forward to our new lives in Belize!
Hello Christina,
Welcome to expat.com!
Thank you for your lovely introduction.
Feel free to create new discussions on the Belize forum. I'm pretty sure you must be having a lot of questions before completing your move

Thanks.
I'm planning to relocate to Belize.
Hi all!
My wife and I are expat want-to-be at this stage. Part of my attraction is the research on happiness (I'm a behavioral scientist). By at least some measures, Belize is the happiest country that speaks English. I want to be part of that! I do recognize the major challenge of poverty faced by Belize, and obviously the vulnerability to natural disasters like global pandemics, etc.
We live in Florida, currently. The big question is do we wait until retirement, or find a way to expatriate while still in our working years? One of us would probably be content to retire young, but I love teaching. I get more out of it than I put into it, so I really want to teach as long as I'm physically able.
On the topic of teaching - any tips, advice, etc. would be appreciated. In the U.S. I'm credentialed to teach at the university level in mathematics/statistics and psychology. My doctorate is psych, only MS level for math. I do have a few years experience working with younger students, equivalent to secondary-level in Belize, but I'd be better suited for tertiary. A concern I have is if schools are permitted to hire foreign faculty. I was short-listed twice for positions at schools in a different country, but the schools are law-bound to rule out all domestic candidates before extending an offer to a foreigner. If any of you all can provide some guidance, much appreciated!
We're eager for our upcoming visit next month (Dec '22).

hi everyone,
I am here for a week with my sister, we are looking for a nice place to stay for 3-4 days with a pool. Closer to the meX border .. found lots of nice things further down.
im waiting for my qrp paperwork then plan to split time between here and puerto Vallarta area. We just took 5 days to drive my van here to get it out of Mexico before the tip expired.
did not love Corozal town… *** hotel pretty dirty and uncomfortable.
glad to see so many people enjoy living in Belize ..

Look at the Housing part of this website.
I have also used Booking.Com for places around the world for last min accommodations.
You say 5 days for QRP paper work.....sounds really fast for anything government related in Belize.
I hope you look at this website for older posts for what others have to say.
Use the little magnify glass in the upper right of each page to search for key words in others posts.
Good Luck, and enjoy!

Now that the long awaited "Costal Highway" is reported easily drivable and should be fully paved by mid 2023, have you thought of looking at the new areas being developed near it?
This new 36 mile long highway, bypassing Belmopan and the mountains, cuts about an hour off the drive from areas near Belize City to the Hummingbird Highway just outside Dangriga.

Many people ask about working in Belize. You can see their questions and answers to them by searching with the little magnifying glass in the upper right corner of each page. Belize like many countries wants their own citizens to find work, over immigrants.
The short answers are:
- You are not allowed to work on a Visitors Permit. This is the Permit stamped into your passport when you enter Belize, or extent the permit after 30 days.
- If you have skills, talents or experience that employers have difficulty finding from Belizeans, then you might be able to get a work permit with the employers help.
- Many folks from other countries do come to Belize with the finances and experience to start and run their own business. But need to hire Belizeans to do the work.
