If you buy a new vehicle in the DR, will I have to pay ITBIS tax of what percent?

Also does that primera placa tax apply?

This will help me decide whether I import or purchase locally.

Thanks

you have to pay 18% ITBIS tax

yes - the taxes and first plate are pretty much the same whether you import or purchase here. If you are importing with residency, you can get a discount on the import tax depending on the age of the vehicle. We imported a 2019 vehicle in 2020, so we got a 20% discount. Of course, our truck that we paid $40k for new was valued at $52k here!

@ddmcghee how do they determine the “Dominican value” of an imported vehicle? I’m surprised it’s not taxed on the price paid.

WillieWeb
They have their own pricing list/values.... there is no discussion

I PAID 20% on the way in... not the discount....18%  actually, if I remember

@ddmcghee Hi! I am trying to figure out if it is worthy to import my car or not. Based on all you had to pay to get your car there, do you think it was worthy?
I have a 2019 Honda Pilot Elite, I paid a total of US$50,000. Based on what you paid for your truck, how much do you think I will have to pay for my car in total to be imported to DR?

Do you have the residency exemption?  If not, full duty based on the value here!  Plus 18% sales tax plus first plates.  Plus shipping plus customs agent and of course insurance.

And the normal expectation is several months to get it out of customs.

I don't believe you have indicated you are a resident. If not I would not import a vehicle. Too expensive and too risky. DR does not look kindly on non-residents importing cars, for reasons I won't go into.

Also, no one on this forum can provide you an exact dollar figure. These are all just estimates based on percentages of assigned value, shipping costs, and, you guessed it, if you are a resident.

Please excuse me  that I was not clear with my question. I was born in the Dominican Republic but have lived in USA since I was 8 y/o, I am 56 now. So, I don’t need to apply for residency since I have Dominican citizenship. I am not looking for an exact amount since I know every case is different. I asked you because the car you imported has a similar value to mine. I just want to have an idea of how much will I be paying only  in taxes and all fees applied by the Dominican government once the car is there and not counting the cost of  shipping the car. Thank you.

There is a program for Dominicans if they have been out of the country for some time...
A discount for importing..... someone here will help you

Why don't you approach a shipping agent who will calculate the taxes you will pay as well as shipping costs?

This one has their own customs agent contact details who will calculate your costs.....

There are others.

Yes as a Dominican there are special rules for you!
ddmcghee

@Tropical Flower  Based on our experience, there was a 30% difference in the value assessed by Aduanas. The 18% registration fee will be based on their valuation, not on the price you paid. I have no idea what the tax implications are for repatriating Dominicans.

@WillieWeb Hi, thank you for your reply.  By any chance do you know the name of the program or how do I get access to it?

@lennoxnev
Thank you 🙏🏼, Lennoxnev. I’ll try that too.

@planner  Thank you planner for your reply. Do you know how do I get more information regarding those special rules for Dominicans? Is there any office that I can go or contact to get more info? Thanks in advance!

Ask in Aduanas or a good customs broker

Are the rules the same as for a car (less than 5 years old, ownership for a year) for a new "resident" to bring either a motorcycle or boat?
