yes - the taxes and first plate are pretty much the same whether you import or purchase here. If you are importing with residency, you can get a discount on the import tax depending on the age of the vehicle. We imported a 2019 vehicle in 2020, so we got a 20% discount. Of course, our truck that we paid $40k for new was valued at $52k here!

@ddmcghee how do they determine the “Dominican value” of an imported vehicle? I’m surprised it’s not taxed on the price paid.

@ddmcghee Hi! I am trying to figure out if it is worthy to import my car or not. Based on all you had to pay to get your car there, do you think it was worthy?

  I have a 2019 Honda Pilot Elite, I paid a total of US$50,000. Based on what you paid for your truck, how much do you think I will have to pay for my car in total to be imported to DR?

@Tropical Flower  Based on our experience, there was a 30% difference in the value assessed by Aduanas. The 18% registration fee will be based on their valuation, not on the price you paid. I have no idea what the tax implications are for repatriating Dominicans.
