A 59-year-old Australian named Allan James has been detained for overstaying in Bali.

The Head of the Badung State Attorney Intelligence Service, I Made Gde Bamaxs Wira, confirmed that the suspect was detained for violating immigration policy by illegally staying for 8 years in Bali.

“The suspect has been temporarily detained at the Immigration’s detention house while waiting for his trial schedule,” Bamaxs said on Friday (18/3)

This overstay is extreme but he's not on his own. However, most overstays tend to be very short as so many tourists believe the free visa on arrival to be valid for a month rather than the 30 days it's actually good for.

As for the Australian chap in the news, it looks like he's going to be staying for an extra three months before he gets deported, but that could change.

Well, if immigration wants to get the Australian government motivated to pay his overstay fees, then they should threaten to execute him by firing squad.  That usually gets the Ozzie's attention!   ;)

Much as the overstay was as long as it was deliberate, the Australian government may see execution  as a bit of an overreaction. :D

He's probably going to be in for a big fine and possibly a little gaol time, but the big punishment is more  likely to be losing everything he has when he gets tossed out of Indonesia.
That long somewhere will mean he has built up a collection of stuff, and that will probably be lost to whomever clears out the house. It's even possible he bought a place - he can say, "bye bye" to that as well.
