6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Guayaquil; Damage Downtown

Ecuador's government reports that an earthquake of
6.1 magnitude shocked the major city of Guayaquil
today.

The quake was centered a few miles from
Bolívar, a town on the outskirts of metro Guayaquil,
at a depth of 58 kilometers at 5:30 p.m.
local time today (July 14, 2022).  Source:
Ecuador's Geophysical Institute.

Part of the facade of the Hotel Oro Verde in
the center of Guayaquil collapsed, according
to Express Daily.

The quake shocked Expat Don Shader in
Manta who promptly posted a video
about it on his eponymously named
YouTube channel.
Scared!

Expat Don Shader in Manta reports
there were two more earthquakes
felt overnight in Manta .. and this
was a big topic of discussion today
at the restaurant where Don and his
friends have breakfast.

Don says he has been "scared" by the
recent quakes felt on the coast.

However, at least for now, Don is
not saying he is considering leaving
Ecuador or the Ecuadorian coast
after a year and a half.  He accepts
that earthquakes are a fact of
life along the Ring of Fire.

Quakes near the border.

Earthquakes and aftershocks are persisting.
Monday's quake centered near the
Colombian border, ten miles from the
regional center of Tulcán, Ecuador, in
Carchi province.

It was a 5.2 magnitude quake, made
more dangerous because its epicenter
was relatively shallow.

There were more than a dozen aftershocks.

The quake damaged over 140 buildings,
mostly in Tulcán and in San Gabriel, where
two historic buildings were damaged.

At least eight people were injured.

No word yet on the aftermath in
the border city of Ipiales, Colombia,
which sits two miles from the
Rumichaca border.
