Such a deposit is uncommon (I also never heard about it before), but not illegal. If you want to give the deposit, make sure the contract states in clear terms what it is for, when it will be returned and under which circumstances it can be withheld by the employer. Otherwise you might never see the money again (and possibly also not the job).
I personally would not do it!
