Health insurance for American retiree in Chile

Hello all,

I am interested in moving with my family to Chile. I am retired but my wife isn't. She and my stepson will be attached to my retirement visa.

I find the healthcare system a little confusing for getting insurance.

  1. At 70, Can I buy my way into Fonasa? I won't be working so the 7% doesn't apply to me. A visa agent said that I can simply pay a monthly fee (7% of my pension?) but I can't find that mentioned anywhere.
  2. Most of the expat sites mention the private system but all the sites I have vistd want to know about my taxable income so is that available to a foreign retiree and can you get in at 70? (I have heard you can't)

Thanks
