Kata writes... about Mexico!

Written byAnne-Lise Mtyon 16 April 2019

Last month, Katariina celebrated the first anniversary of her baby, her blog- Kata Writes! A blog about taco diapering, drinking real Tequila for the first time and all sorts of anecdotes about a Finn in Mexico... (there are many!)

Tell us briefly about your expat life and where you're originally from.

I'm originally from Helsinki, Finland. In my early twenties, I did my study-abroad in Michigan, US, and my internship in Luxembourg. After that, I lived three years in Portugal and three years in Belgium, and finally moved to Mexico, where I'm still brand new.

What brought you to Mexico?

When in Belgium, my fiancé decided to make a career change. As things didn't really pan out in Europe, we ended up moving to his home country Mexico.

What made you want to start a blog?

I'd been writing my debut novel (which is still not finished) for a while and wanted to take a break by writing something completely else. My blog is that "something completely else." It's actually been great fun working on the blog and it's helped me come up with new ideas for my novel, too.

Tell us what your blog is about and how our readers can make the most of it

My blog "Kata Writes" is about my life as an expat both in Belgium and now in Mexico, too. My posts are not purely informative but more about my personal experiences and observations. I like writing about everyday things, such as cultural differences and intercultural relationships, learning languages, food (there's a lot of stuff about food!!), the oddities of a particular country, etc. with a humorous twist!

What are your next projects in terms of your expat life?

Right now, I'm just going to watch and see where life takes us. Things are brewing in terms of my fiancé's career, so we might end up staying in Mexico for a couple of months or a couple of years - only time will tell. The unknown is exciting and scary at the same time, but I guess that's what keeps life interesting ;)
