Can anyone tell me. Is there a simple way to transfer money from Vietnam to overseas without using banks. I reviewed online transfer aps like WISE and it seams expats are unable to send money from vietnam. I live 2 hours away from Ho Chi Minh and it would be very frustrating to travel all the way to Ho Chi Minh to visit a western union branch. Is there an easier online option???

With Vietnam đồng, next to impossible.

If you have a US dollar account here you can send that much easier.

With a bank you can also transfer online, you don't have to physically go to one for every transfer.

I've done these two often:

HSBC - Through the website.

Shinhan - Using their mobile app.

Both in USD, never tried VND.

Transfer takes about a day.

Only in case there is unclarity about the source of the money they will ask you to come identify/prove.

I have also done it multiple times using accounts with VIB & Standard Chartered. The incoming money was always traceable from various overseas accounts & invested in  VND Term deposits or VND high interest bonds.

Transferring back overseas the VND was always converted back to USD or GBP. With Standard Chartered it was always done online, with VIB I always had to visit the bank & fill in the paper work.

With both banks it was painless & trouble free.

I actually liked visiting the bank to do the biz cos those VIB girls in their uniforms are so cute!!
