Hi all,
Newbie on the England forum? Don't know how to start?
This thread is for you
We invite you to introduce yourself on this topic, to share with us your expat story if you are already living in the country,
or to tell us more on your expat projects in England if you are planning to move there.
It will enable us to help you better but above all to wish you a warm welcome.
Welcome on board!
Hello everyone. I am a newbie to this forum. I hope to gather information about relocating to the UK for as long as I can legally do so. My husband and I were lucky to have lived in central London due to his Naval career. Now we are retiring and would like to move back for at least one year. To me—London is one of the greatest cities on Earth. I am a little biased since my background is in British Literature and History. Some would say I am an Anglophile indeed. I will post questions in the future with the hope that some of you will help me navigate my travels.
Hello, does anyone know if it's possible to get sponsorship with Amazon in London or Canada? Looking to move in April. I've been looking online and can't seem to find that answer.
Thanks
A.
Hello Ahw08,
Welcome on board !
Where are you from and where do you want to move ?
You normally would need to apply with them, in one of their country branch.
All the best

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
The UK no longer offers a retirement type of visa to anybody - they no longer exist; assuming you are both US citizens with no access to a UK passport, then assuming you are still of working age, then the only real chance is for one of you to get a job in the UK that qualifies for one of the work visas, he/she then sponsors the other; this link will take you to the UK Gov website that lists them all. Once you are in the UK on a work visa, you can build up enough "residency" to qualify for permanent residence (5 years) and no longer need a work visa.
I suspect your previous time here accompanying your husband while on Government service will not count as these are normally diplomatic types of visa and the time spent using one cannot be used for other immigration activities.
As it stands, US citizens can stay in the UK for up to 6 months in a 12-month period on a standard visitor visa; this link will take you to the UK Gov website with the details. You can't use this visa as a springboard to apply for any further long-term visa. Perhaps 6 months in the UK, then move on to another European country?
If you have any further specific questions, then please come back to us.
I hope this helps.

Hi again.
Probably not, Amazon just (today) announced they are cutting 1000 jobs and closing 3 UK sites (Doncaster, Hemel Hempstead and Gourock) altogether. Probably the best route in would be to find work with them in the US, then keep your eyes open for opportunities in other countries.
I hope this helps.

Hello Everyone,
Haluk here. I moved to England in late 2019 just before Brexit as a self-employed translator. About 3 months later "the Pandemic" happened. Turns out I picked a stellar time. Anyway, I’m still loving it. I'm looking to build a social network here and that's the reason I registered.
Kind Regards,
Haluk Aka, [link moderated] (MCIL)
@Julien I am Bérengère podiatrist, I am in contact with an employment agency to come and work in England. Our family has the desire for this experience abroad... and the search for the MAXXIMA agency fell at the right time!
I'm in the process, with interviews and recordings (HCPC which is giving me a hard time)...
It’s not easy, it puts our motivation to the test…
Hello Berengere Caviale Doby,

Hi and welcome.
My home town, well, across to the other side, but it has all changed so much. Many years ago I used to work around the London Docks before they all closed and they built on them.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Expat Team - this means I'm one of a team of advisers who work as volunteers for the Expat.com Forum. I'm not a moderator, there is a small team of those people who actually work from Head Office who hold that appointment. Some of us are "Experts" in the organisation - you can read all about it by following this link. We also have an FAQ section which may interest you; this link will take you straight there.
Please feel free to contribute to the Forum; there are Terms and Conditions in place that apply to everybody; this link will take you straight to that bit.
I think that covers most of it; if you have any specific questions, please feel free to either post them on the open Forum so all can learn, or if need be you can send a Direct Message which can only be seen by yourself and the member you send it to.
I hope this helps.

At the end of the day it all depends what kind of computer skills you got. If you got something in demand then no one can stop you. Only Apply to the role which offers sponsorship visa and look for category on gov.uk website. Then apply...message me direct and I will share link with you if needed. Another idea is come on masters student visa and then get post study work visa for 2 years and apply jobs when you in UK.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
As a US citizen, you can visit the UK for a maximum of 6 months in a 12-month period; the UK Gov website lists all of the requirements and this link will take you straight to it. It becomes problematic if you want to stay longer as you will then need to have some kind of work visa (and a job); details of the available work visas and how to apply can be found at this link. If you're planning some kind of retirement in the UK, then unfortunately the UK does not offer retirement visas to anybody.
As Cheryl has already said, if having read the links she's given, you have any further specific questions, then please come back to us.
I hope this helps.

@Cheryl I'm planning to work, I'm only 22, nowhere near time to retire yet lol, thanks for the link I'll for sure have to look at it and yes it would be my first time, I've never left the US before.
For me, the most important thing is to find a good job

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Apologies for the late reply. You need a work visa and you are right in that there is a lack of clarity as to which. There is clear guidance on the UK Gov website for the person who is going to employ you; this link will take you to that. There is a British Au Pair Association and they have a website; this link will take you to it; it contains a directory of some UK agencies who specialise in Au Pair work, perhaps you can speak to them and see if they have anything positive they can suggest.
I hope this helps.
