household import duty

Post new topic

donn25

From what I understand, while import of household goods is in principle exempt from duty, current policy makes it impossible to qualify for this when moving to Portugal:

  • Your NIF tax residence must be your Portugal destination address
  • You can't change that NIF address until after the SEF appointment, months after you move to Portugal with the residence visa.

Does anyone have experience, going through household goods import and paying the VAT duty?  Any issues with this, outside of having to pay a reasonable assessment?  We don't have a lot of valuable items, but there will be some large musical instruments, probably a couple thousand euros total value.
