Post new topic

Hello.  I am a recent resident to Portugal and want to set up my home here with some things from US like a few  pieces  of furnitre and my personal art collection.  Does anyone know if I will be taxed to bring these items in?  Thanks so much.  Larry

Larry, I am not able to answer your question? But I have a few for you?  What area of Portugal did you find that you like? I am looking into a visit next year. Have been looking to rent in Tavira area. I am coming from Florida USA. Where did you come from  ?

THanks.

Lynda

Hi Larry

we purchased a home 6 months before i shipped 5 boxes of personal items from canada. despite having all required documenrs from the Portuguese embassy to confirm they were pre-used personal items not for resale, and including items like photographs and linens etc, we were charged by customs based on the listed value of each individual item, which we had to define in the shipping and release documents. Shipping required insurance and that value 2.5k we put on it as the approximate value, was then used by customs and we were then charged almost the same again in tax, but that did include a storage fee by the shipper as it took customs 7  weeks to release the items. please get lots of advice before you make your decision . i used DHL and would not recommend them!

I used an international shipping company. They packed and inventoried and there are people set to receive in Portugal and then deliver to me. But yes there will be a customs fee unless yoy have a resident visa in Portugal.

@lfdasalla Hi Larry, I am trying to find out if there are any fees or taxes for moving my art collection to Portugal. Did you get some info? Thanks, Ana

My wife and I brought a 40 foot container full of our things (furniture, kitchen wares, garage items, clothes, artworks, and so much more) from Florida to Caldas da Rainha this past January.  Everything went perfectly.  And we paid NO tax on anything.  If you are relocating to Portugal, you may bring 2 shipments over within 12 months of your move here TAX FREE.  One very important thing:  You MUST make up a detailed list of all items you are shipping and send or take it to the Portuguese Consulate where they will approve it and stamp every page of your list approving it.  We sent them a 41 page single spaced typed list of our items.  It was approved and we shipped with no problems.

You may contact me directly via private message if you would like to learn more.
