Moving OUT of Portugal, BACK to the UK

Having lived in Portugal for around 4 years, I regret my employers have now insisted I move back to the UK.

I have sold my house in Portugal and found a courier to bring back the personal belongings I took out there 4 years ago but have discovered a potential problem.

My partner believes you are charging an “EXPORT” tax on personal goods being taken OUT of Portugal and despite my best efforts, I cannot find anything about this on the internet?

Fortunately, I have sold most of my furniture in with the house but there are a few items I took to Portugal that I would like to bring back such as a dining table and chairs, book case and wardrobe as well as my clothes, books, games, TV and so on.

I am not concerned with any IMPORT tax the UK may charge (as it is a Transfer of Residence so is exempt) but am worried about any charges Portugal may make to let me leave with my belongings so if this is the case, I would be grateful if you could post a link to any websites that might explain this to me and tell me what forms, if any, I need complete to allow my couriers to leave Portugal?

Many thanks,

Oh, in which part of Portugal were you living in ? I hope your house had time to appreciate and if yes, was there a capital gain tax to pay ?

Well, if nobody asks you to pay anything for the rest, don't do anything.

Julia

I would have thought a Portuguese removal company would know.

No export tax, but you may have an import tax from UK side.

Don't forget to submit tax returns on the sale of your PT property
