Can you rent just a room and use this for the D7 visa ?

You can indeed, As long as you can ask the Landlord for a contract. I stay in a shared apartment and rent a room. Didn't have any problems with the D7 application with that.

As long as you have a contract for 6 months or more and the contract has to be registered in the finance in the city you will live.
