Land Registry system hacked

The government’s land registration’s website was down on Thursday morning, as a result of a hacker attack.

According to reports the attack began on Wednesday evening and hackers have requested money.

The government’s IT department is involved to try and resolve the situation due to the sensitive data the website carries, with the digital security authority is also attempting to find a solution.

Earlier this month, the University of Cyprus was also hacked and went down for a short time.

This was last week...   Unfortunately the system is still down and this has caused severe disruption in real estate transactions and planned transfers of title deeds.

All appointments have been cancelled.

The land registry website should be fully restored next week, as technicians have been grappling with a hack which took place last Wednesday.

Land registration director Elikkos Elia told the Cyprus News Agency on Monday that the website will be restored gradually with IT teams working intensely to try and resolve the problem.

“Our efforts are going towards restarting some operations this week and expand this the following week, so we are fully operational,” he said.

One of the first website functions Elia is aiming to have restored is the filing of sales documents, which he said he hopes can be done by Tuesday or Wednesday on a trial basis in Nicosia. This would be extended across the country if all goes well on the trial.

Other the immediate services the department wants to try and offer include transfers, mortgages and liens, for instance being able to file a deed of sale or a memo against a person.

More time will be needed to set up the land registration portal to exchange electronic data. Elia added they were waiting to hear from the experts on when that would be feasible.

Asked if there was any permanent damage to the site’s portal, he said it did not appear to be the case so far.

Asked about security measures the land registry had taken to avoid such attacks, Elia noted they had the same measures as every other government department. In some cases “invisible enemies are one step ahead of us.”

He expressed certainty that the IT department and deputy research ministry would take more steps around that.

“What happened to us I believe will help cement the Republic of Cyprus for its e-government.”

Tech specialists have been working overtime to try a weekend restore of the site.

@Toon Hi There

Any news on this.  I am waiting for a completion, my Lawyer is depositing the paperwork this week and I understand there will be a backlog for transfer appointments

Best wishes

Donna

Toon

2-4 weeks taking you to mid to late april

donzo00771

@Toon Many thanks.  Wonder how long I will have to wait for the appointment for deeds transfer/completion once they are up and running!!!

Toon

Transfer of deeds is dependant on land registry but is currently backed up quite heavily .... Similarly with the Council of Ministers permission to buy process .

Good luck

@Toon  Many thanks Toon

Breached, the hacker forum, was taken down last week but I have no idea why they did it.

The FBI had access to the servers, thus every scrap of information on them. Admittedly the vast majority of the stuff on there was total crap, but there was also a massive load of ongoing intel to be had.

The upshot for the rest of the world is it was full of hacker news, including details of data breaches that never found their way into the press. I never joined but I used to read it a couple of times a week just to see what was going on.

Hi Emma

Me too!!! Paperwork was deposited to Land Registry last week (29th March).  My Lawyer said we just have to sit and wait for an appointment once they are up running but can’t seem to get any updates on this.  God only knows the backlog.  So frustrating!!!

Hope you hear soon

@donzo00771

Hi Donzo,

we are in a very similar situation. I seem to find news articles from a week/couple of weeks ago but can’t find any recent info online. This forum has been the most helpful thing so far.

I will update on here if I get any more info from anywhere but in the meantime I will keep everything crossed 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Does anyone know how long it’s taking now to get a completion appointment? with the ministers permit for our buyers taking over 5 months we are now waiting another month so far for the land registry appointment. so far 7 months since we agreed a price.  In the meantime its costing us time and money.
