Second hand cars do quite well here they seem to hold their value ....

Car tax can be very cheap it all depends on co2 ratings and engine size...

motor insurance is in my opinion good value it all depends on the car, driver status and cover  required.. oh and your no claims bonus proof

Do you find car prices expensive in comparison to the UK for example?

I've been out of UK for 14 years so I would find that difficult to answer. .all I can say is when in Malta I bought three second hand cars and vowed I would never buy second hand  again so bought new here in Cyprus and best decision I made .. and then bought another new one and got a great price when I sold the first new car at 5 years old .. trouble free motoring ....

But I think the general consensus of others here is that cars are expensive

New cars are about 20 to 25% cheaper than Ireland, maybe not that much of a difference with UK, but as Toon says second hand cars are quite expensive, even older ones are pricey.

I also found insurance to be competitive, and hassle free.

Initially we rented a cheap runaround car on a long term basis for the first 6 months until we were ready to buy new, it gave us the opportunity to shop around and decide on which model we wanted. Overall a good experience.
