Post new topic

Jaskobix

Hello. I am from Poland. I will stay for month in Vietnam. I want use motorbikes. I have local driving license with A category. Also right now i made international driving license with Geneva convention. Is this enough to let be drive safetly and avoid police fines? Or maybe i need Vienna convention not Geneva? I found many different informations about that. For example on my local govermant website it says that i can use both. But some people on local social media vietnam groups says i cant and i should make vienna convention. Please help. Thanks :)

US Embassy and Consulate in VN

"Foreign driver licenses, even when accompanied by an international driving permit, are not valid in Vietnam.  Even though a driver’s license from an ASEAN country may be recognized in certain circumstances as valid in Vietnam, it is still advised to obtain a local Vietnamese driver’s license if you wish to drive legally in Vietnam."

Official Canadian Gov't Travel (scroll down to "Driving")

"Driving; You must hold a valid Vietnamese driver’s licence to drive a vehicle with an engine of 50CC (cubic centimetres) or more, including most motorcycles."

For a definitive answer, I strongly advise you to contact The VN Embassy in Poland.

Confused yet?

Vietnam launches online international driving license (link) (1968 Vienna Cnvtn). Was this rescinded?

Yet, we have these "official" statements.

Because my Vietnamese driving licence ran out with my TRC last October I was so excited to see that I can get an IDP here in Vietnam, so I contacted my well respected, trusted & long time Visa agent here in HCMC. Ah but no such luck because to get an IDP here in Vietnam she told me that I needed to have an in date Vietnamese driving licence & even although my UK driving licence is still valid I would have to go back to UK to get it. Did a quick check on the interweb & sure enough that was right which is a right bummer cos I could have got it over the counter at any PO in UK & was back there last November1f644.svg

@Jaskobix Hello friend, I am a Vietnamese here, with your problem, don't worry too much. If you already have an international driver's license, feel free to use it in our country, but if someone says it's not eligible or something, it's not (because even my friends don't even know it). have a driver's license but still drive on the road every day). Besides, if you are a foreigner, the Vietnamese police will also limit calling you to the side of the road to talk, so please enjoy in our beautiful country! Thanks.

What happens if a foreigner has an accident, injures a local Vietnamese, and does not have a valid driver's license?

I suspect the answer is, trouble. By this I mean trouble, with a capital "T".

I agree that as a foreigner we are often not stopped/bothered by the police, though in my years here this is not 100% guaranteed, having been stopped on several occasions.

I also agree that you have a most beautiful country, something every Vietnamese should be proud of.

Please get used to calling it by its proper name. Its an International Driving Permit (IDP). There is no such thing as an International Driving License.
