Post-Covid-19 situation in Ecuador

Post new topic

Mickael

Hello everyone,

The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on the world, including on expats' lives. Travel restrictions, business closures, budget cuts, and health measures have created unprecedented challenges for those who have chosen to live in Ecuador.

Now that the pandemic is moderated, expats are adjusting to a new daily routine. So tell us, how is your expat life now:

Are there still any health measures in place in Ecuador? If so, what are they (wearing a mask, barrier measures, etc.)?

Have you noticed any changes in the population's habits or behavior after the pandemic?

What is your new work rhythm: do you still work remotely or are you spending more time in the office?

Have you changed your spending habits? If so, which ones?

Despite this pandemic and its consequences, how do you see your future in Ecuador?

Do you have any advice for other expats and future expats on this new daily life in Ecuador?

Thank you for your contribution.

Despite this pandemic and its consequences,

how do you see your future in Ecuador?

----

With the government having declared that the

covid emergency is over, I see little problem with

proceeding as before regarding my life and plans

in Ecuador.

My principal residence is my personally-owned

condo in Centro Histórico, Quito.

My principal concern in Ecuador is not disease,

but rather the security of my sector in light of

the indigenous protests that occur or are

threatened from time to time.

Fortunately, some of the indigenous leaders have

recognized that their chief tactic of last June when

they blockaded the roads in metro Quito and

other parts of Ecuador .. were as much a detriment

to indigenous families as they were an impediment

to the government.

Expats who live near the coast have other concerns ..

including upticks in crime attributed to narco-traffickers

and the earthquakes that devastate some communities

unpredictably from time to time.

The coast of the country lies along the

Ring of Fire and is geographically

susceptible to seismic challenges that can be

incredibly destructive.  The 2016 quake, measured at

7.8 magnitude, showed the vulnerability of properties

such as high-rise condos that some Expats had purchased.

Cracks appeared in the walls of some such condos ..

rendering some buildings uninhabitable, at least

for a while.

Mickael did not mention the fact that there was an

attempt to remove El Presidente last year (2022)

through impeachment .. and another attempt to

do so is currently underway in the National Assembly.

In your opinion, how concerned should Expats be

about the indigenous federations' repeated

attempts to oust the current president?

---

So long as the protests and complaints are peaceful,

I don't see a problem with moving to Ecuador.

Indigenous groups have succeeded in helping oust

three presidents of Ecuador in the last several decades.

The process of impeachment can be seen as an

alternative to violence that enables a change in

government with relatively minimal interference

with commerce or the daily lives of most citizens

and Expats.
