Finding affordable accomodation during the summer months

Post new topic

Jay Clarke

Can anyone recommend to me which area or city / town in Portugal to look for a modest place to rent from June to September? My budget is about 700€ a month max. The prices for even just a small one bedroom in the south near the beaches is 1000€ and up.

Thanks

Hi Jay, Welcome.

For your search to be successful in terms of budget, I suggest that in the summer months you should stay away from the Algarve, or at least away from the southern beaches. Why not look for other places, equally served by beaches further north?

@JohnnyPT thanks very much. I've been a resident of Spain since the 90s but haven't visited Portugal since 99. This was a time when things were affordable and the summer months weren't saturated with tourists and xpats. So many Americans want to escape the US nowadays for various reasons which makes me skeptical  as to whether I'd feel comfortable around them having left the US permanently myself 25 years ago.

American expats have normally chosen the Algarve and Lisbon region. In the rest of the country, especially on the coast, there are fewer expats of several nationalities.

Hi Jay. Did you take a look at Idealista? You can easily filter there by what you need. If a so called T0 or T1 does the job for you then places like Coimbra should be in your budget, especially during the summer months when students are on holiday. Even in the beach towns of the Silver Coast there is nothing much for rent during the summer.

Well, then go without an agent. Maybe drive around and look for "for rent" signs that are not put up by agents. I bet many people will be looking for tenants for a 4 months lease.

Please elaborate - you claim to have not been here for 20+ years but accuse all the listings on that site as being from agents who rip you off ?

I'd not suggest you may be a narrow minded bigot and the (mainly) fine residents of portugal would be happy if you never graced their land with your delightful presence as that would be unwelcoming.

Could we all take a deep breath and get back on topic please.
