I am debating between Buenos Aires and Rosario

Listen closely.... Argentina as a whole is a corrupt and crime ridden country, but if you want to pick the worst of the worst... pick Rosario. The violent crime is COMPLETELY out of control and it is the most corrupt city in the country. Think Chicago in the 1920s. It's common knowledge in Argentina that Rosario is horribly corrupt and crime-ridden. If you don't want the BIG city life like Bs.As., consider Cordoba or Mendoza. There's still a lot of crime.... but.... it's not Rosario.

wow. I'm thankful for your perspective and response. it definitely looks quite the opposite online and in pictures.  I really like BA, it's just pricey in the areas I really like and crowded

@chamelyn5 I'm not a fan of big cities. As a matter of fact, when I came to Argentina almost 20 years ago, a condition with my employer was that it would be in Cordoba and not Bs.As. I left another company in the US because they wanted to move me from the Dallas area to NYC. So, I will NOT live in a big city. But, if I had to choose between BsAs and Rosario.... I would choose BsAs. Why? Because Rosario is a corrupt, crime-ridden cesspool. I feel fairly confident in saying that Rosario is the most dangerous place in Argentina. There are drug gang shootouts happening openly in the streets of Rosario. It has always been corrupt, but in recent years, it has become ridiculous. There's also a lot of bad stuff that happens in BsAs, but when you consider the population, your personal risk of personal harm is much less. I'm not sure how you arrived at the binary selection of BsAs or Rosario, but I would recommend that you open your options up to consider Cordoba and/or Mendoza also. Yeh, there's crime there also, but at least it's not Rosario, and you get away from the big city of BsAs.

My advice is worth every penny that you paid for it. lol

BTW... WHEREVER you are in Argentina.... if you want to be able to walk out of your house and walk down the street feeling ANY sense of security, your options are to live in a secure apartment in a highly trafficked area that is a "nice" area, or to live in a house in a "country" or closed neighborhood with security. If you live in a normal suburban neighborhood that is not enclosed with security, believe me... once you get the feel of things and what's going on... you will not want to step foot on the streets outside your house, and in reality, you won't even feel safe sleeping in your own home.

thank you for this thoughtful response.  my idea was Bs As our Rosario because I spend a lot of time in San Rafael,  which is country quieter and could use a bigger metropolitan area to balance my time in Argentina. I only looked up Rosario as an option based on population.  I'm also considering Montevideo after spending a weekend there. have you spent time in Uruguay?

@chamelyn5 Yes, not much, but I have and it was several years ago. My only last impression at the time was that it was cleaner, but more expensive relative to the dollar. The beach, as most in Argentina, is cold. Sorry I can't be more help on that front.
