Hi Everyone, me and my wife are ready to leave the US right after Christmas this year for about two week initially... Depending on the outcome of the election we will come home and secure our house and come back for a much longer stay. I'm retired military and have lived in various country's over my 20 year enlistment. Where do most retired military live? is there a Facebook group for retired military expat for Argentina? can you drive on US drivers license? Thanks Mike

@PIPEWORKER2  HI, I would not recommend Argentina  for long term security , you can stay in Argentina  for as long as you want without a long-term visa  and just pay a small fine when you leave. But getting a DNI is almost impossible.  I have been living in Argentina for years and have not managed to get a DNI.  Without a DNI  you are a second-class citizen.   Foreigners can buy and drive vehicles in Argentina on their US licence together with an international license no problem at all.    Outside of the big cities, Argentina is a safe place but without citizensip you would not be able to have arms.   My recommendation would be to look at Paraguay, The Property is half the price, it takes just 90 days  to get a cedula (like a DNI) and you can have as many weapons as you want.  It is a much smaller country with more ex-pats. No one chooses  Argentina (even though I love it) because really immigration employees do not want foreigners (unles you fit their woke agenda) so they make it as difficult as possible.  They operate like this they ask for a police report from the home country which should be within 3 months ideally.  Then they delay and say your police report is out of date.  They can keep this up for decades if you are white and heterosexual with a family.   However, if your wife has a baby in Argentina then you will probably get citizenship.   Long story short look at Paraguay they welcome foreigners and immigration will help you.

@PIPEWORKER2

Hi. As a US expat in Argentina of almost 20 years, I would 2nd most of what Wolf321 said, though I can't speak to Paraguay. I've seen a lot of changes in 20 years. When I arrived, it was an economic paradise for people with US dollars. The crime was bad in that there were a lot of pickpockets and assaults, but over the years it has gotten exponentially worse. The economic advantage has all but evaporated and it doesn't look to improve anytime soon. The criminals now rule the streets and now almost all of them are armed and they will shoot you for your tennis shoes and the laws practically prohibit you from protecting yourself. The victim is often the one that ends up in prison. And I don't even live in Bs.As. I live in Cordoba Capital. When I first arrived, I was amazed at the personal freedom in Argentina and now, freedom is infringed upon more than in the US. You mentioned dependence upon the outcome of the elections, but didn't clarify your political view. Sincerely, that makes it more difficult to provide you with an answer more helpful to what you are looking for.
