Long post, perhaps I am crazy, perhaps drunk, still to share views

Positive and other remarks

1.Mahmutlar (a bit to the east of Alanya) is I think a small suburb with all the amnetities

2.Very much Russian speaking, but in Restaurants, Shops, .. people can speak English/German as well

3.Probably more expensive than other areas

4 I do not swim in the sea or walk (infrastructure is great and very well maintained)

5 At least 10 good restaurants within 500 m (depending on condition I think 10 minutes is good).

6 SOK, A101,BIM, Butcher (lamb), Cigarette shops (where you can buy/order 300 packages), MMM (Jameson Whisky) are very very close.

7 For shaving loads of hairdressers (but I have my favourite for shaving (TRY 150 without tips), very good service (nose, neck, eye-brows, ... full service)

8 People are friendly as long as you approach with proper respect (good, very good)

9 In general (converting to EUR) still are things cost-effective, even if locals but also expats complain (notably UKR/RUS)

10 Safe, no mugging or harrassment

11 People love cats and dogs (in general)

12 Low, very low communal taxes

13 People might complain, but honestly  (in EUR) Electricty (and gas and water) is very very cheap

14 Internet speed is fine (not always stable, but with a cable things are more than fine (100 MB), WIFI can be something between 200 KB but also 20 MB

15 Automated debits for phone, electricity, water, ..

16 Always possible to find help against a VERY reasonable price (furniture/TV/small repairs/...) and I have to say fast (repainting arranged for example within 2 days and done very well)

17 Climate in spring and autumn is excellent

Negative things (not per se limited to Mahmutlar (Alanya))

  1. Regular mail/post almost non-existing
  2. Bureaucracy (eg changing driving license)
  3. If to compare to eg Hungary shops open late.
  4. Uncertainty (even for owners/residents) on Ikamet
  5. ATM's often do not work (annoying as Restaurants/Hairdresser/Normal market really expect cash), not a big issue, but unlike west-europe
  6. a lot of avoidance of taxes (renting out of property) just my frustration, people should pay if due and pay for a bit comfort, paying TRY on Hairdressers, Shoes, Botox, but not a few EUR on complex
  7. People want to save on Aidat (we want comfort, but we do not want to pay? (inflation does not exist))
  8. Infrastructure of Electricity is not the strongest in the world
  9. No foreign restaurants (no Indian/Chinese/Mexican/...) REALLY a shame
  10. Turkey is considered so/so by financial industry (my foreign accounts ...) Guarantee for local accounts is VERY  VERY limited
  11. In Summer it is very hot and in winter quite cold and a lot of rain
  12. ..

Good for now, curious to see your views.

@cdw057 Whereas cost of living is important, quality of living even more. WIth cost of life people seem to be interested, but for me good living (balance between quality of life as well as finances are important).

@cdw057 I personally would not live in a place like that city. I live in Kusadasi not far from Mahmutlar and the negatives you see there are all positives here. Retired from the USA and am super happy with my choice to live here. Very little I miss from having in the USA. Area is very diverse when it comes to food choices. The people here are super friendly and warm. WIFI is super fast. It is becoming hotter now it looks like come every summer season, but the whole world is going in that direction. One thing about Kusadasi is it a tourists city with over 700 cruise ships entering it’s port and millions of visitors hitting the streets. The shop owners need to speak the languages of their visitors to attract business and they are super courtious to their visitors as well as everyone that lives here be it expats or Turkish citizens. Might be worth it to you to take a peak at Kusadasi.

@dncole4156 I do not know Kudasi, but for emergencies many restaurants are in crawling distance (difficult and painful) and not needed at this stage, but ..., for normal shopping my wife will take care of this. What about Kudasi?

I've been Kusadasi numerous times, 3 on a a cruise ship and 5 as a tourist. Really easy to walk most places but as we know taxis are V cheap...well compared to the UK

Am unsure why (it's probably my skin colour), but the shop keepers even remember my name after months of being away. Two have even offered me jobs as say that I am 'very good with people and am always happy' 😊

Kush is rapidly going up my list, especially as the customer service person at my last hotel stays in touch & would like to date me (but natch only if I'm not staying at her hotel )1f60d.svg

Lots of restaurants and they have Indian, Mexican, italian & Chinese restaurants.

The only downside is to find a swish cocktail bar at the marina, sometimes only a long island iced tea or a margarita  in a nice environment will do at lunchtime...hic! 🍹 There are a couple of rooftop bars in town but they only open at night.
