HSBC 2.75% ATM Fee ?

Hey there ,

First time I used an HSBC ATM today . I heard it had a higher limit than others , so wanted to see if I could withdraw 8 million . The most I've gotten elsewhere is 6 million from UOB .

Anyways , I use a Charles Schwab debit card , and it's always refunded me the 44.000 or 66.000 one-off ATM fees I've encountered in the past . But the HSBC machine showed me the exchange rate - which was low , around 23.300 - and added in parentheses (includes 2.75% markup). This was in addition to the 44.000 VND standard fee or whatever . As I couldn't decipher if this was an ATM fee or a shitty exchange rate , I cancelled the request and used the Shinhan Bank ATM next door .

... which then ate my card .

Needless to say , this will make meeting the apartment owner tomorrow morning ( to pay first months rent + security deposit ) more interesting .

.

.

.

For those of you dying to know , I called the Shinhan Bank help line and was instructed to head to a specific branch in five business days ( next Friday ) .

Schwab can wire you funds, directly into your landlord's bank account if you want, usually within 24 hours, though the weekend might slow that a bit.

I've never used that particular bank's ATM system, but you are almost certainly referring to something that many banks offer as an "optional" exchange rate.

When the message comes across the screen it's kind of confusing and may keep you from noticing that to one side there is a field associated with a button saying "refuse" or a similar term.

Always look for that button and choose it and then your card will be processed normally (for Schwab).

The other possibility is that you might have accidentally chosen the "credit card" option when faced with the screen offering

1. Current Account

2. Checking

3. Savings

4. Credit Card

Those choices appear differently on different ATMs, and the credit card choice will basically have you asking for a cash advance and not a cash withdrawal.

In 5 years I've had my card eaten three times in Vietnam, because I allowed myself to become distracted and didn't pull the card out of the machine within the 30 seconds I was given.

Two times (when I realized the mistake immediately) I called the number on the ATM and a technician arrived within a couple of hours and pulled my card out for me.

The other time I didn't realize I'd lost my card in the machine until I got back to my place.

I called the Schwab 24 hour helpline (toll free on Skype) and they stopped my card at my request and immediately shipped me a new one which I received within three days.

Your situation is a primary reason that everyone is recommended to have at least two separate funding sources available (ATM cards/credit cards with cash advance).

Best of luck to you as you work through this unfortunate bind.

Thanks !

Yeah I was confused with the HSBC machine . I think I was in the middle of figuring out what it meant , when it decided I was taking too long and itself canceled the transaction and gave back my card . I will look for the refuse option next time .

Yeah , I was disappointed with Shinhan Bank customer service . The real estate agent I spoke with said it happened to her once but they sent out a technician right away .

The landlord was pretty easy about the whole thing ! Said I could get him the money by Friday .

Great point on the having at least two funding sources . I do also have Express Send set up with Wells Fargo and can wire cash instantly to VietinBank , $8 fee each time . But bank's got to be open for that . Luckily , I had some cash on hand , which I normally don't , but might make it a regular practice now .
