Not very good restaurants in the neighbourhood of Keszthely and Heviz. I have reported before so need to repeat myself. But some VERY good excptions at a reasonable price, looking back at the time a bit more expensive then where we live (Alanya in Turkey), but acceptable.

You are not treated like a king, but the food is good I think price (around 30% higher then in Turkey). Service is also important and in Hungary I can say it is FAR less then in Alanya (Turkey).

Still, for the forum, I think restaurants in Hungary are VERY good, please go.

I was in Mustafa kebabs in Siofok a month or so ago and it was marginally OK.  For 4 people, it cost about 50 EUR equivalent.  It's too much for a kebab, bit of salad, some fries and a drink each.

I was in a UK KFC at the weekend with the family and we paid £32 for lunch.  Far too much.

I read the other day that the average meal out in a resturant in Hungary is about 10,000 a head. A nicer place is at least 20,000 a person.

My god, that's crazy time.

I know in Vegas when my niece would treat me to a fine dinner she tipped at least $80.00 and the meal was more then $400.!!

It wasn't even that great of a meal.

We once had lunch at a Ja[anese place inside a casino. Just my niece and I.

She order 2 small prtions of Sake.

Each bottle cost $40.

I know at Lee's Liquor store ( in the states) for $6-7 bucks I could get a nice buzz from a bottle of Sake at home and have twice the amount.

10K HUF seems a bit high. 20K HUF in a top end place, I can believe.

Even Burger KIng costs north of about 12K+ HUF for 4 people.

I am beginning to think the restaurant business in HU is finished.

I don't know what's going on in Vegas since C-19 with their buffets.

They used to be reasonable and many casinos had great food.

One of the best I think was the M casino.

Way off strip but a nice hotel/casino known for their pool parties and buffet.

They even served beer and wine with the meals without an extra charge,Had cognac shots inside their after dinner coffee and great deserts. Over 250 items on their menu.

Their Fish Fridays were a bit more costly but they had everything, all cooked to perfection.

They even filmed some tv cheif's cooking show from inside the buffet when it wasn't open for business.

The Bellagio lunch buffet was nice. I went with my great -niece age 9 at the time for lunch there.

They were really tasty and not overly crowded.

We ate at least once a week at the Palms ,my husband's fave place to play.

Often he had free buffet tickets for his playing hours.

To just sit in a restuarant and try to choice a meal is not that fun to us.

Buffets you can try a bit and if you don't like it leave it.

These days I dosn't think I eat enough in one sitting to even do a buffet.

Restaruants don't always use the best oils and reuse oils over and over again.

Not healthy at all.

In the last 5 years I can only recall eating one gyro out and one take out of Chinese food.

They guy serving the gyro was dirty.

He didn't use a glove and touched the cash and register and fixed the gyro without washing his hands between. My husband wanted to throw my gyro in the trash because he was afraid I'd pick up a germ.

I feel better cooking our own food, might be allot or repeats with recipes but at least we don't repeat.

Mrs F and I had free or cheap casino food in LV.   It was nothing to write home about. I did find it odd they provided water in plastic tumblers in a kind of cafeteria kind of setting.  Like a kind of institution with harsh lights.  Wasn't cosy at all.   It was a long time ago - late 90s.  Never been back since and no intention of going either!

I'm also of the opinion home cooking has to be better than anything in a restaurant.   We only go to them if forced into it by not having enough time, travelling or some other circumstances.  I do wish I could be more creative in the kitchen.  Mrs F is good at it.

Our No. 1 HU Fluffyette is keen on Korean and Japanese food. It's OK but not what I am used to.  I really do not like sushi at all.  Last time I had Japanese food (in a posh place in Dhaka, Bangladesh), I was quite sick.  Put me right off.

We used to spring a bit on dinning out in Ca. and it was always in a nice Japnese palce.

We sometimes double dated with my sister and one of her BF's.

Other then Japanese food, we never really ate out that often.

Taco Bell after a swim day was fine with me.

When I met my husband he always took me to dinner at a nice HU restaurnat in Ca.

There used to be a good 5 or 6 places with nice food and good serivce.

One place ,the Blue Danube ,closed after some punk HU guy shot and killed the owners 26 year old son. The son manged the place and would't put up with anyone making a disturbance. Some HU guy brought a gun in and did the young man in.

Very sad, from what I've heard he was a great son and a good manager.

Yes, some casino buffets are terrible in Vegas.

I mentioned the ones that were decent for the price. I was taken to the buffet by my visiting cousin to the one inside the Golden Nugget, downtown. It actually wasn't that fancy and the food wasn't that exotic but it was all cooked just right and tasted rather good.

Mostly American/English sytle selection there.

I often refused to get to buffets because having worked inside casinos for 5 years that was all we ate at work.

They have a selection of buffet food in the workers dinning area.

Not as large as what the public is offered but the basics. For a buck or 2 you could get the cook to make you a special order and have it ready when your next break came around.

I heard from old time dealers that they used to cook steaks to order for dealers, we never really had steaks on offer when I worked. ( I also didn't eat  red meat then)

They also let dealers drink alcohol on their breaks for free at the bar in the old days.

That lead to many fist fights with players!

The good old days.

I loved hearing the old Vegas stories from old timers.

They no longer have those foot long hotdogs for 99 cents or those 99 cent shrimp cocktails.

I'd skip those hotdogs but those shrimp cocktials were great with a bloody Mary on the side.

That was the old Vegas experience.

Been thinking it over, the HU restaurant in S. Ca. where that young manager was shot might of been called, The HIll Top.

One  of my co-workers in a beauty salon had a mother who worked at the Blue Danube.

So strange, would run into Hungarians all the time in Ca. without even trying.

I don't think many of these HU restaruants in Ca. are still around.

There used to be a HU menu/buffet syle eating place in NYC in the 70's.

We ate there allot, loved it.

I suppose I'm a fan of "peasent" foods, simple roasted and baked items or deli style foods.

These days I've really cut back on making my fave dishes like potatoe salad and mac salad. Too much mayo for me.

Sunday buffet brunch in Vegas complete with pickled herrings and or smoked salmon with a glass of bubbly. That's about as simple one can get but so tasty.

OK, so I decided to look up the shooting. I'm confused because my husband said the 26 year old son was shot and killed .

Looking at the old article online about it it doesn't mention the son being killed only a LAPD decetive.

He was a 50 year old man who was shot and killed by a 37 year old native of Hungary.

The son, the manager was having an issue with the 37 year old and while dinning inside the police officer stepped in and was shot.

Needless to say business dropped after that!

I know the son was killed too, perhaps that happened at another incedent at the same location?

I know in the 70's-90's the HU mob was going nuts in Ca.

The 37 year old was wanted for narcotics violations while agruing with the restaurnt manager.

Killed the police decective with a 9 mm gun.

Geesh scary stuff in any case.

Might be safer to cook at home.

I know in the 5th district of Budapest several years ago my husband and son had just passed the McDonalds when a bomb went off. Gang related thing as well.

Marilyn Tassy

Ok, hard to believe but it was two seperate events with 2 differnt HU restaurant shootings.

One with the 26 year old killed was in the 1970's and the other was between a wanted HU fugitive and a LAPD decetive.

My husband said what's the big deal? He said it was in 2 differnt decades.

Once is more then enough.
