Switching from P Card to a single permit

I have been in Belgium since 2017 working for an international organization, and I am not a EU citizen.  I have been living with my family all this time on a Special ID Card issued by the Protocol MFA.  My contract expires on 31 December, and in the mean time, I have found a job in Brussels, for which my future employer will file a work permit application.  My question is whether I can still stay in Belgium and wait or will I need to leave Belgium?  My kids are in a public Brussels school and interrupting the academic process is not feasible.
