Hi Sunny,

You must both have a NIF and a bank account in PT, where you can both be account holders.

Open a bank account in Portugal as a non-resident

So I paid to get the NIF while residing in the USA.

I opened a Português bank account in September while I was spending money equipping my furnished apartment.

But now the Português government ripped the rug out from under my feet. No NHR. No, they don't care.

Hi, yes, you need both a NIF and a joint bank account. [Promotional content]

I am looking to open,  account with Activo due to the low fees and excellent rating on Online Banking. I hope they allow me to open online, I see many websites asking asking as much as  EURO 300 for opening a Bank account, I am not sure if this can be done online, via video calling, Will try and update here

Thank you

Hi,    I have an account with Millenium BCP (bank owning Activo) and I tried to open an Activo account from outside Portugal  but failed, also unable to access their email etc without log-on first. Subsequently I went to Portugal and found an Activo office and made an appointment to open bank account, I was told that though it does not say it on their website it is not possible to open an account via that website if you access it from outside the Portugal, part of the issue is having to use a non-Portuguese mobile phone number to get their logon security codes etc.  I may have changed in the last 6 months but unlikely.

You can't open a bank account online in any Portuguese bank. You will need a citizen card to do that.

@Sunny,

Many expats have used atlantico.eu, please read my link above. Give it a try, you might just succeed.

@JohnnyPT

It's not allowed anymore.

Thats very helpful, thank you. So I think there is no other way to open the account, as the link provided above does not work

I just opened a bank account online in August, through Banco Montepio and all I have is a NIF.  They have a branch in Newark, New Jersey.  I did everything online.  It took approximately two weeks.  I even received my MasterCard Debit card via mail and activated it online.  They were very helpful and I am glad to give the contact information (phone number and email address, via direct message).
