Security Alert: Terrorism towards US citizens abroad/worldwide

Post new topic

voipnetworks

The department of state issued an important message to all US citizens worldwide: Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution.

How are you guys/girls feeling about this important notice living in the DR? Is this a real threat for US citizens in the island of Hispaniola?

Would like to get your honest feedback.

Thanks!

Erik Anderson

i feel like there are only so many things that I can worry about i just take precautions and stay out if dark alleys alone.

Your biggest threat on Hispaniola is probably not being served a cold enough Presidente beer.....LoL On a serious note, for those who are in places where threats are a real possibility, please stay vigilant, be safe, and if you see something, say something.

Fred

You have to look at safety from a lot of angles.

Does DR support Israel, Palestine, or remain neutral?

It has relationships with both but  has made several statements condemning Israel human rights abuses.

There's a fair chance the country is likely not a priority for pro-Palestinian activists of any sort.

That means your likelihood of being on the receiving end of an attack is lower.

Now we have to look at the reach pro-Palestinian forces have.

DR has a tiny Muslim population so, when you take away the vast majority who are far more interested in getting their kids to school and paying the electricity bill than killing anyone, your chances of meeting an extremist is pretty low.

However, the middle east is a mess and, rightly or wrongly (I try to remain disinterested as far as this forum goes), the US has taken sides both politically and militarily. The US makes a lot of money from supplying armaments to Israel and has engaged Palestinian forces directly.

That, like it or not, makes the US a combatant, thus a legitimate target.

Unlike Hamas and the IDF, I disagree with targeting civilians but, as they do, that puts all US citizens in the firing line to some level.

On a point noting the validity of the warning - it claims tensions as the reason for the warning, but it's actually the US killing people on Israel's behalf, and/or supplying the weapons that kill people. That and political support for killing civilians in the UN.

Personally, I can't support either side because both deliberately murder women and children.

If you want safety, write to your lawmakers and ask them to stop taking part in wars.

In my opinion this is barely a consideration here.

Good morning,

I have lived in Santo Domingo for almost 3 years and personally I have not seen any descrimination or terrorist acts yet!

I hope stay that way for all of us sake.

I really don' t see or think this will carry all the way here considering is a Latin island full of all ethnic backgrounds.

I am hispanic by birth but people know I am not from here as soon as i speak lol and the way we dress.

God bless you all

I agree with Planner. It doesn't matter where you are in the world, you should always be cognizant of what is what where you are & I've not seen, heard or read if issues that are a treat here. Canada puts out such warnings as well but not as often as the USA for obvious reasons. One last thing is to keep your opinions to yourself if not with company you totally trust......IMHO

Terrorism would be the least of my worries here.

However there is a place in transit to SDQ where they pack you in large groups for hours with nowhere to go and getting yelled at, feels like being treated like animals. That I don’t like.

cruffman

if some terrorists are passing through form external sources then mayhem could be a possibiity...there are no homegrown terrorists in the caribbean. we have more worthwhile pursuits than killing strangers.

planner

So let's just give this a rest.  Nothing to see here...

@Papito NL

Whoa...wait a minute now.....what part of the trip is this so that I can expect it and be aware of this, please? Good fyi. I definitely need to know this part and where this occurs, before I get all wth is going on.. and you say it's on the way to SDQ? See, I only expected plane, transfer, plane, land, go on about your business. So this step you mention is a ln unknown step I was not aware of.

U.S Customs
