Convocation OFII?

Post new topic

hbataille

Hello,

I got a notice for a welcome interview at the OFII office in Toulouse.  The problem is, they require I come in on a Wednesday and (as the should know) as a mom with 5 kids who are all home on Wednesday this is the worste possibe time for me.  We have activities all over, and only 1 car.  Even if we cancelled everything, briging all 5 kids in for an interview downtown is ridiculous.  I have called numerous times and left serveral messages trying to reschedule, but no response.  The interview is wednesday...I find it incredible we can't contact anyone to change dates. What if a child is sick that day?  What if our car breaks down, which it did recently?  What happens if I just don't show up?

Perhaps you should be grateful that you were given a rdv and hire a babysitter for one day? There is a reason that many of the French resent immigrants…

I don't know if this e-mail still works,  but it could be another way to make contact:

I have seen this response to a question just like yours on the site

https://demarchesadministratives.fr/que … et-absence :

Bonjour,

@bentfamilymom thank you for the help and understanding.  I could think of a few better reasons that the french resent immigrants.  I'm an American living here for one year and my husband is french.  Our kids are bilingual and we have an immense love for french language and culture.  I don't think the French resent that kind of attitude.

chaslaw

I don't know how any of this relates to alleged French resentment of immigrants (a problem not unique to France by any means), but I do know that scheduling an appointment with a government office in France (or anywhere else, really)  is not the same as setting up a vaccination at Walgreens or booking a restaurant reservation. With any kind of government appointment -- especially a face-to-face interview like this -- you take what you get and work with it. They're just not set up to take into account anyone's personal situation, and they especially can't be expected to factor in things like the fact that on Wednesdays most kids are not in school or that someone may have only one car and have a lot of kids' activities to coordinate.

hbataille

@chaslaw fair enough, I understand they can't factor in everyone's situation.  What I find incredible is the complete inability to contact someone.  And I was simply curious about the consequences for not coming.

@AARO health Merci beaucoup pour les infos.

If you read the incomplete msg from Bentfamilymom, there is the antecedent for the resentment issue being raised.

If you read my msg, it indicates there IS allowance for people not being at the beck and call of the administration.

The bureaucratic interactions cannot be tailor-made, but there's no reason to excuse administrative arrogance.

There are two conflicting realities to take into account.

1) The administration has many ways to be consumer-friendly when it wants to. An excellent example is the history of cartes de sejour. Originally, people were treated as cattle, having to line up before dawn and wait hours. Then came the civilized reform of making appointments. The real change came with Covid. Instead of two appointments, which still required 2-hour waits, the deposition of renewal requests were moved on line and required no appointment for normal  cases, and picking up cards can now be done in 5 minutes without waiting. So, somehow, this possibility was waiting in the wings, but it took a health disaster to put it into place.

2) The bureaucracy is being deliberately starved of experienced personnel and budget, like the health system and other services.

chaslaw

@AARO health Those are very interesting observations, AARO. I well remember the cattle-at-dawn period, but I applied for my first carte de séjour back in 1976. It's great that things have progressed, although, as you imply, it's sad that it took a global health crisis to produce real change.

Governments are suffering all around the world as politicians spend less on services and more on everything from defense (sadly necessary) to pork-barrel projects for their own constituencies to corporate kick-backs to lining their own pockets. Sorry for my cynicism.
