Hi All ;-)

About us..

Simon was born in Wales UK and immigrated to Australia 25 years ago. I was born on the east coast of Australia and moved to WA 25 years ago.

We plan to retire to the Lecce region of Italy within the next 3 months.

Simon has been to Italy (many years ago) I have not and we dont speak the language but we have started the process of learning.

Looking to live life for "us" to enjoy our early retirement. To explore as many adventures as possible ✨️

So much to do and so little time.

Selling our assets, visa applications, housing pet transfers, insurances, superannuations...OMG, the list goes on and on and.....

Hi everyone !

I am Katia, I am italian but my mom is american and I have lived here in italy for sometime when I was little and then went to usa to do my studies. I have lived and worked in US, Spain and UAE where I met my husband who's from Patu (Lecce).

I very much miss hanging out with people from different cultures as I have always done living abroad so I thought I would write here and see if anyone wants to meet up. If you have small kids, I have a 2yrs old son and a baby girl on the way.

cheers

We're new here on the forum.  We live in Scotland but plan a visit to Lombardy in March, as we are considering buying an appartment near Lake Iseo, to use when we retire (next year).  We'd love to hear from local, English speaking residents that might be willing to offer useful insights.

Buongiorno la Team Expat, Julien,

We are going to move with my partner to Italy, we are originally from France; looking forward to discussing :)  We have a few questions,

We each have a Tax Code. My partner is in professional transition (process), I will be teleworking with a French contract (back and forth):=> Do we need health coverage?

=> We will also make a request to Anagrafe (is this possible with a French contract or do we need to add another person/other information)

Thank you so muchWe wish you a lovely, enthousiastic day

Hi Julien et al,

My name is Sean and my wife Michele and I are considering moving to Italy in a few years for retirement. We are interested in settling in Piemonte as we love the region.

My wife is Italian as her father was born in Italy and remained an Italian citizen until his passing a few years ago. My wife is going through the motions of obtaining her Italian citizenship, however, the process is not smooth and the Italian consulate is not efficient nor clear in their communications, unfortunately.

My wife's family are from Veneto, however, she has some family in Milan as well.

We have two children. One is 20 years old and the other is 16. Obviously, the plan is to move once they both move out which we hope to be in the next few years :)

We have two dogs which are both miniature schnauzers. They are named Willow and Penny and we love them way more than our human kids...<kidding> In fact, the furkids will be joining us in Italy and the kids hopefully will not ;)

Great to meet you all and I look forward to chatting soon :)

Kindest regards,

Sean & Michele

We are still back in the UK and hoping to buy a holiday home with a view to it being our retirement home before too long. We know the hamlet (in the Frosinone area) where we want to buy but my limited Italian is proving a challenge in finding a surveyor that could manage building work while we're not there. Lots of hurdles but will be worth it!

Hi, I am Jane.  I live in Brighton in the UK.  I don't want to buy in Italy, but I started the slow process of learning Italian 2 years ago, with the aim to be sufficiently fluent by the time I retire (probably 2026).

My aim is to live out there for extended periods and perhaps work there in some capacity or other.  The cities I know best are great, but I feel I should explore more. I favour the North, but that is because that's where I have visited more.

Moving as a single person is quite different from moving as a couple, being (then) around 60 years of age is another difference.  However, I wanted to start listening to experiences and ideas.  It takes  along time to understand the language never mind the country.

I have studied Italian in Venice, Verona, Lucca and Rome and am happy to share my experience with anyone.  I go out 3-5 times a year to study.

Grazie tutti!

Hi everyone. I am Catherine, a British citizen now living in Germany. We moved to Germany with my husband's work almost 5 years ago. We have owned our home in Italy for 12 years and are looking for the best way to be able to go and live there once we stop work here in Germany.

We are slowly working towards citizenship in order to obtain a European passport, but German is a difficult language and we fear the whole process will take far too long.

We are interested to learn what others have experienced.1f60a.svg

Hi everyone,  my name is Ben Cooper (everyone calls me "Coop") and my wife (Catherine) and I will be moving to Italy next year.  We have been on several trips to explore where we might settle and have narrowed it down to Sicily (Cath dad's side is Sicilian) or the Liguria region.  Cath's mom's side is Irish and Cath has Irish citizenship so hopefully our acquisition of a permit of stay should be fairly painless.  Cath is also going to pursue her Italian Citizenship once we settle in Italy.  I will pursue a Carta di Soggiorno as her spouse when we settle in.

We are excited to be part of this forum and look forward to connecting with everyone and getting info as we plan.

@Julien. Tjanks for adding me.   I'm Mary, my husband, Lenny, and I are hoping to retire in the Apulia region by the end of the year.   We love Italy & are planning to spend 90 days in the fall finding the right city/town to settle down permanently.  We definitely want some place small enough that we can get in the 7% tax range so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello All and thanks for the inclusion!

My husband Jerry, and I are in the process of obtaining  Italian citizenship jure sanguinis. We will be moving to the Bari area in January 2025; renting while we search for our Italian home... Locorotondo and Monopoli are presently our top picks. Jerry is applying in Italy since the Los Angeles consulate is not giving appointments for citizenship. Jerry has contracted with Smart Move Italy to handle his document search and case. My case falls under the 1948 Rule and I have collected all of the certified documents necessary to prove my lineage. I now need to engage an Italian law firm to handle my case. Does anyone have positive recommendations?

We hope to meet other Expats like you while also immersing ourselves in the Italian community.

Thank you and looking forward to this adventure we've all undertaken- Donna & Jerry

TheGirlLovesCars

Hi all,

My husband and I will be moving to Italy in about three years (when our youngest finishes high school), so we are beginning our search in earnest now. We will start spending vacations in Italy in regions we think we want to live in to get a sense of the place. I am in the process of gaining my Italian citizenship through descent and should be finished with the whole process right around the time we are looking to move.

We hope to rent long term to start until we find that perfect area and then buy.

I'm looking forward to the adventure, and I'm sure I'll be on this forum often.
