American friends are hoping to come to live in Gent. Problem is with the tax regimes in both countries. Is there anyone qualified on this forum who can give advice whether or not they might be taxed on their world-wide income? Male is ex-government employee and taxed at source, which is apparently differing from other US taxpayers. Conflicting advice so far, a veritable minefield. Thanks in advance for all knowledgeable answers, especially from Expat Americans.1f601.svg

Americans are taxed on worldwide income by IRS,  I can't speak for Belgium's side of it though.

@Andermatt1 Hi I’m an American expat living in Brussels. I’m not qualified beyond sharing my personal experience so first I recommend you speak to a Belgian accountant. This is my first year here but I’ve met with Belgian and US accountants who advised that tax in Belgium is owed on worldwide income. You have to pay that tax in your place of residence, no matter where it is earned. Apparently you can file US taxes indicating that you are exempt from the US amount you owe if what you pay in foreign taxes exceeds what you owe in US. I recommend meeting with an accountant for advice specific to your situation.

mcdylan18 many thanks for your response. the man was a government employee [teacher] so taxed at source. both are now retired.  presumably this means they wont be earning any income but will check
