Fair enough Dan. You're correct, I always have the option to vote with my feet.

Yes, we do, and many have voted. The Philippines does seem to present a culture shock that many foreigners, perhaps most, could never survive long term. But you seem like a survivor as are most of us on the forum.

@bigpearl So you are more concerned with being recognized than the health and well being of your people, interesting priorities!

@danfinn I believe that machines without a Catalytic converter cannot effectively clean their exhaust, as this device is essential for burning harmful substances and producing safer emissions. It seems plausible that the Philippines, with its abundance of talented and intellectual individuals, could easily develop a Catalytic converter as a solution for these jeepneys. Additionally, Diesel Exhaust Purifier scrubbers could be a temporary fix to reduce pollution significantly. These devices attach near the end of mufflers in some designs, normally used on Heavy Equipment. It is important to recognize that the Filipino people shape THEIR country and YOUR identity is NOT only reliant on jeepneys. Real talk before Jeepneys ever existed were Filipinos any LESS of a people. Your ancestors did not have jeepneys and they certainly did not feel any less Filipino.  I say this because people say it’s cheaper, well yes it is.. But at what cost to your people's health. This is a critical health issue that must be addressed for the future well-being of the nation. Research shows that pollution leads to premature deaths and various health problems. Don’t do this for the government, Do this for the betterment of your kin folks!

Perhaps you should read? I am promoting repowering with fuel and emissions efficient engines to help solve the pollution problem especially in the larger cities, I lived in Manila and everything was plastered with black oily soot, not just the jeepney's but trucks and industry.

Converting to batteries/electric is cost prohibitive at the moment compared to repowering with a Euro4/5 or 6 star engine, said it earlier that our Peugeot 508 wagon averaged 60 MPG and I simply offered up alternatives to retain a cultural icon that is the Philippines, most people/foreigners recognize the jeepney and not the national flag as the Philippines.

What can you offer as a solution instead of criticism?

Melbourne Australia has been running electric trams for 130 years successfully, and regularly upgraded, no different to the jeepney here, modernize, the fuel savings over time will more than make up the retrofit and a lot less pollution.

OMO.

I think you are a bot.

@bigpearl i am pretty sure i offered some solutions

bigpearl

Yep a bot.

You only offered band aid solutions or remove the problem, how are the millions of people that traverse daily going to move around?  Replace with a modern set of wheels at say P2M or repower the icon for P150/200K or even 300K, keep the icon.

I wonder as I have no idea how an old side valve diesel engine would deal with modern treatments to reduce emissions as well as the cost, as a learned bot you can answer.

@Sweetbread2006  It is important to recognize that the Filipino people shape THEIR country and YOUR identity is NOT only reliant on jeepneys.

Interesting with two unrelated clauses but my very point is that we are guests so how would MY identity rely on an aspect of a foreign culture, I e.   Jeepneys? I might consider my Irish heritage to be a part of my identity but certainly not Filipino although my 2 Fil-Am kids can (and do) consider it theirs.  Here, we foreigners should just keep our mouths shut when it comes to aspects of our Host's country that we do not like. Especially Americans; Filipino's do not seek advice from Americans from whom they achieved independence.

Let the local citizens worry about that. Stop being so condescending as to believe that the Great All Knowing Foreigner must educate them. Clue: They already know it and I suspect you haven't been following this but Filipinos are trying to make improvements to the extent that a poor developing country can. It just might be the case that they could never afford a mandate of catalytic converters and particulate scrubbers or whatever. The best you can hope for is cleaner combustion but again, that is THEIR problem to solve, they are not inviting your advice though free advice us what it is lol.

Sure. And our Philippine hosts simply lack your education and wisdom so you tell em' what they need  do lol.

I agree, as foreigners with no voting power and noncitizens, we can fit in or get out.  Today is another one of those days I am glad we are not down wind from the trash burners.

Well said in most degrees Dan and one has to wonder why this perpetrator has singled out the Philippines for pollution and emissions when there are far worse countries overall.

While not a mechanic I would wonder sweetbreads solutions with 60 plus year old technology.

I'm with the masses here to keep their mode of transport and their identity and as mentioned governments tend to jump in boots and all instead of addressing the problem logically,,,,,,, happens in all countries.

Are we going to get rid of jet airlines, fossil fuel power stations, plastics? While progress is being made I personally think that the 2050 zero emission mandate isn't going to be achieved, but hey I won't be around to worry about it but my kids and grandkids will be and suffer our over consumption and short sighted thinking.
