Crafting in Romania

Post new topic

Hello everyone,

Discovering and participating in the artisan culture  in Romania  is an opportunity not only to enrich your personal knowledge, but also to forge authentic connections with the locals. More than just a hobby, it is a gateway to integration and a deep understanding of the traditions that shape the cultural identity of Romania, making your own experience more meaningful.

What opportunities are available for residents to participate in workshops or training in Romania? Are there any places or occasions to learn or practice local crafts?

What craft practice have you had the opportunity to try or would you like to try? What were your impressions?

How has discovering and participating in the local artisan traditions enriched your experience as an expat?

What challenges have you faced in trying to get involved in the artisanal culture of your host country? How have local artisans welcomed your interest in their traditional crafts?

What advice would you give to expats who want to explore craft culture in Romania ?

If you have any other relevant information on the local artisan culture, please feel free to share it.

Thank you for your contribution.

Crafters all over the world are very special people. That said they are not always artisans.

Romanian artists tend to appear aloof and do not apreciate intervention. They adore praise but often do not have time and patience to impart their art. Crafters however are a different lot. Often self taught or from friends or family, they appreciate the community of crafting. The social aspect of producing something with the hands while imparting knowlege with the mouth and soul.

I have attended pottery classes, icon painting classes, gardening and pressed flower courses all with something learnt and something to bring home. I have met some wonderful people and made a few new friends. I was quickly accepted by most.

On the other hand, i advertized weekly for a few months on FB a weekly sewing circle to be held at my home and had no takers. Not one.

There are often events listed on FB in your city. Check it out. The local muzeums also have regular courses.
