Scottish emigres to Lithuania

Post new topic

Kazimieras Matukaitis

Hello everyone,

Looking for some specific information.

About twenty years ago, I visited Lithuania, and somewhere west of Kaunas, possibly in the Sintautai area, I saw one or more grave-stones commemorating Scottish Protestants who migrated to Lithuania.  Ideally I would like to be reminded of the exact location, and the names and dates on the memorial.  If anyone has that knowledge, or any related information, I would be most grateful to hear it.  A photograph of any such grave-stones would be best, but even just the bare information would be good.

Many thanks to all for reading this.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, a notable community of Scottish Protestants settled in Lithuania, particularly in towns like Kėdainiai and Vilnius. These settlers often integrated into local society, and over time, their distinct cultural markers, such as gravestones, became less prominent.

Regarding your recollection of gravestones west of Kaunas, possibly near Sintautai, there is limited documentation of Scottish graves in that specific area. However, the Sintautai Cemetery is listed on Find a Grave, though it currently has only six memorials recorded, none explicitly linked to Scottish settlers.

For more detailed information on Scottish communities in Lithuania, you might find the book "The Scottish Community in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, 1630-1750" by Michael Broun Ayre insightful. It explores the history and integration of Scots in the region.

Additionally, the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry project highlights the presence of Scots in Lithuania, particularly in Kėdainiai.

If you're seeking specific gravestone information, local historical societies or archives in the Kaunas region might offer more detailed records. Visiting the area and consulting with local historians could also provide valuable insights.
