Hi, Im an Australian teacher and would love any advice people have about teaching in Toulouse.
Are there any teaching agencies?
What do I need to be able to teach in English schools?
How hard is it to get a job?
Is there an English Assistant job website? Is there any teaching job website?
What is the best method to find teaching jobs in the private sector?
Thanks very much!

Hi Rebecca

I might be able to help you. I'm a TEFL teacher trainer (work at TEFL Toulouse) so have to answer questions like those quite a lot!  Feel free to contact me directly via this site - it's too much info for a forum!

Here is a rundown.

To work in the public school system, you have to be a EU or French national, because you need to pass the relevant concours/exam which is not open to non-EU non-French nationals.

The only exception is being an English language assistant, BUT there are no job postings for these positions because the government has a program for which you have to apply in Australia and hopefully be chosen:

(You have to be between 20-30 to be eligible)

You can work in the private secteur, look for jobs in the normal places, such as the pole-emploi site. http://www.pole-emploi.fr/accueil/

English teachers are a dime a dozen in France, so you need to be qualified if you want something well-paid. A Bachelors degree is a minimum, as well as a TEFL or CELTA qualification; a Masters degree will give you an advantage too. If you have a Masters degree you can be a lecteur/lectrice in a public University.

Hi guys,

I'm moving to Toulouse in August (SO SCARED!) for a year and will be looking to do some TEFL work. I have just completed my degree and will be doing a 4 week course when I get there. Any tips on the best way to get some students for private lessons?

thanks
Rich

Hi - didn't know you were on this question too. For private teaching put an ad in leboncoin when you are ready. Also, have some business cards printed and put them in local shops. For this sort of teaching no TEFL qualification is necessary. Your pupils will very probably turn out to be schoolchildren or students.

But if you are doing a TEFL course the school will be able to direct you to teaching agencies, where you could end up teaching adults individually or in groups.

Richard.Clapton

Thanks a lot for your help chap :)

catherinecat

Hi Richard. I assume the 4 week course you're talking about is the TEFLToulouse course? If so, then yes - you'll be given a list of all the local schools, together with contact details during the 'job guidance' session. And yes, leboncoin is the best place online and what works well is placing ads in the student areas ... outside private schools etc. Good luck! Emma

Thanks a lot Emma, yes that is the course I am doing, did you do it? If so how did you find it?

catherinecat

Well, I used to be a teacher trainer on it so know it pretty well and I did it myself back in 2010. It's very intense, very stressful, ultimately extremely rewarding and an excellent course. Jon really know his stuff and it'll equip you with all the skills you need to teach EFL. If you're on Facebook, ask to join 'EFL Teachers in Toulouse'. It's my group and I set it up to share info on the TEFL community here - jobs, general info, sharing ideas etc. You'll see it's a big and friendly EFL community here and you've no need to feel scared about the whole thing! Toulouse is a great city, you'll love it :-) Emma

Hey all,

I have CELTA from Oxford International in London. And teaching experience with Education First in Cambridge and an EU passport soon. Can anyone recommend a good place to find teaching work in Toulouse?

Merci! 😀👍

Your qualifications and experience should give give you a flying start, especially if you get that EU passport.

Personally, I'd start with Google, but don't stick the language mills. Real schools might well offer more money, better hours, and a more stable job.

Maybe i need to set up a an auto entrepreneur now.

Getting started will be hard work. One for a lot of market research before you jump in.

What sort of competition is there in your field?

How much do they charge?

Can you match, or even undercut to get started?

What advantages do you have over them, and them over you?
