Hi,

I am interested in studying Chinese in China, but I am not exactly sure which city i should choose. I was hoping you could help me out =)

My criteria is

1) I am very health and fitness conscious.I don't want to be in a city where just by living in it, my health suffers, e.g. I heard that in Beijing, the pollution is so bad that the Chinese authorities have warned being of good health not to unnecessarily go outside

2) I would like to learn the standardised (Beijing) Putonghua.

3) I know that there are many dialects and accents spoken in different cities, but I heard that when schools teach, they usually use pinyin and Beijing accents, however, once outside the school, many people speak in dialects and different accents. Should this be of concern? I am a little worried because I would like to practise what I've learnt with my interactions with the local population.

Is there anything I should be aware of ?

Thanks in advance =)

Hello and welcome on board studyingabroad!

When are you intending to move?
Have you already searched for university?
Maybe that could help you make your choice about the city.

thinking of moving there late January or early February of 2012, after Chinese new year.
Universities don't worry me as much as the place itself. It seems that there are plenty of programs from universities to private institutions that will offer Chinese courses.
Do you have any universities you would suggest?

Where did you finally go to learn Chinese?

Beijing accent is not Recieved Pronounciation of Mandarin though Mandarin is based on Beijing dialect.
I suggest you go to Taiwan because all the cities in Mainland China are polluted somehow and HK and MC almost only speak Canton. But if you insist on learning the simplified characters, Shanghai seems a choice for compromise.
