Help from job center.

Post new topic

I recently finished my master's, and currently, I am unemployed and looking for a job. I am not a citizen of Germany. If I get help (temporary) from the job center until I get a permanent job, will that create a problem in getting my German passport or PR?

Whether you are entitled to any help from the Jobcenter depends on many factors, and the rules are often unclear or conflicting. It is generally difficult to get such aid before you have completed 5 years of stay in Germany, and people who are just here to look for a job are also excluded. So ask the Jobcenter!

But receiving Bürgergeld does of course hinder applications for longer permits or citizenship. Therefore you may prefer to manage without it.

@Mack_01 I do not think it is a good idea to seek help from the job center. Especially if you ebtered Germany with a study visa- If you take that route, you moght have problems renewing your work permit.

As Beppi mentioned, you (likely) are not eligible for such assistance - unless you are married to a EU citizen. One certainly cannot get PR or citizenship while on such assistance and it certainly doesn't look good on one's record for getting either.

It is a bit of a trap that one might be eligible for help in some situations but it doesn’t mean one won’t have long term consequences for getting it. For PR and more so for citizenship, officials want to know that you can manage on your own.

Why would they want people to stay and even become citizens if they are likely to become unemployed? You might have what you think sounds like a good explanation but it is really a red flag on one’s record. Some assume when applying for citizenship that they have a right to it by having passed the citizenship and German B1 language exams and having a job. Not so. Those are the minimum requirements. Things like having needing assistance, having had any criminal offenses or failing to pay or file their taxes returns on time can all be negative factors.
