Typhoon Yagi effects on Thai Nguyen City and environs

Post new topic

Spent the last 24 hours speaking with friends in Thai Nguyen, as well as relatives of my GF.

In Thai Nguyen City and surrounding area, volunteer's using private boats have been out rescuing people stranded by the flooding (some on the second floor, some on their rooftops!). Emergency deliveries of food and water are being made to families in need. The local coordinator of this effort has asked people to contact him by Zalo, as his phone's data and its battery are unable to handle all the incoming calls. No sign of action from "officialdom" as of yet.

There simply aren't enough boats to help everyone. These "Good Samaritans" deserve the utmost respect for their selfless actions. Also, FB now has (at least) 30 postings from people in Thai Nguyen who are willing to host others in need, with offers of accommodation and food. The cries and pleas for help on Zalo are difficult to read.

GF has confirmed the death of one of her friends, with another two "missing". In the last 8 hours, contact has been lost with several of her relatives in the village of Phu Long. A friend of ours who owns a small restaurant in Thai Nguyen purchased and distributed to the boatmen 150 head-mount flashlights to aid them in their search.

My long-time visa agent friend in Hà Nội just posted on her F.B. page that no one should travel there right now unless it's absolutely essential travel.

Because of the residual rain they are expecting flooding to get worse before it gets better.

I saw some encouraging videos of cars slowing down to drive parallel with motorbikes and served as windscreens to keep the bikes from being blown over.

Video of my friend Ca, his wife Ly and their child, getting help from volunteer rescuers in Thai Nguyen city.

Their home is on a bit of a hillock, so unlike some of their neighbours whose homes were totally submerged, they had to deal only  with chest deep (!) waters. Their child spent the night in the hospital (fever, diarrhea, sweats) but has now fully recovered and has been released.

Now this is an innovative way to get around during a flood. With age comes wisdom1f602.svg1f923.svg

@Aidan in HCMC I just saw the news today and it’s truly sad, I hope some relief comes soon. This probably also explains why no one is getting an email from immigration for the past few days? I hope the storm passes soon👏🏽
