US expats, your opinions about the upcoming presidential elections?

Hi everyone. I’m a content writer for Expat Magazine, and we are planning on writing an article about what American expats abroad (and non-American expats living in the US) think about the upcoming presidential elections. How do you think the results will affect your life as an expat? Might it affect your decision to stay where you are or return to your home country? What are your worries and hopes? Do you think the result might affect practical issues such as your taxes, pension, or prospects for getting a visa for your spouse (if she/he is not a US citizen)? Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts with us.

Donald Trump has been rated worst president in U.S. history by the Siena College and the 2014 Presidential Greatness Project. He is a pathological liar. Practically every statement he makes is false. He devised a plan to steal the 2020 election that consisted of 4 steps and that plan is detailed in special counsel Jack Smith's filing. He sent a rabid mob to attack the U.S. Capitol resulting in many injuries, some fatal, based on the lie that the election was stolen. Hundreds of Trump's insurrectionists have been arrested, tried, convicted and are now serving decades in prison yet Trump is still a free man.

Trump has been having secret conversation with Vladimir Putin and even sent Putin Covid test kits when Americans needed them the most. Trump loves dictators and wants to be one himself. Trump stole top secret documents and hoarded them at his home and refused to turn over the documents. Trump has a plan known as Project 2025 that will gut the U.S. Constitution if he wins this election. He threatened to arrest and imprison his political rivals and shut down news media that disagrees with his insane policies. Trump has been convicted of 34 felonies and faces prison time if not elected. He will also face prosecution for various other crimes in Florida, Georgia and Washington DC if he loses the election.

Many of his close cabinet members have spoken out about his poor leadership and some claim he is an aspiring fascist. These include his vice president, his attorney general, his chief of staff, his secretary of defense and dozens more. If Trump is elected it will be the end of democracy in the United States of American. I am a U.S Army veteran, Trump has referred to veterans as "suckers" and "losers". The fate of American is riding on this election. Kamala Harris is a good, honest and caring person. It is incalculable how much more qualified Kamala is than Trump to be our president.

The above post is an example of Trump Syndrome in it's final stages. What will those infected do if Trump wins?

All I can offer as a non US citizen is God help America and free thinking constituents. A lot at stake here.

And here was me thinking political discussions were discouraged on expat.com.

Nice way to foster division among fellow expats.

All I can say Aiden is you are correct but as expats there are differing views at many levels. I'm an Aussie and watch international news which is mostly plastered with the goings on in the US so sure we all have opinions, thing I see is this will be the most critical election in 250 years and could lead the greatest nation on earth going further down the rabbit burrow or putting it back to where it once was, it's very relative to the whole world as are the ramifications.

Any different to what's happening in eastern Europe? Regardless we all have beliefs and choices,,,,, so far it has not really affected us in PH.

Cheers, Steve.

The US election is a great way to start arguments about the colour of the idiot you want to vote for.

Not many realise the only difference is the type of corruption you want to see from the White House.

The US is a plutocracy that appears to be a democracy as long as you close your eyes.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. @Aidan in HCMC is right, Expat.com does have a no politics policy on the forum. We do, however, inform our magazine readers on topics like elections because their outcomes often have a direct impact on the national climate, immigration policies, and the experiences of expats both in the country and abroad. Our goal is to keep our community informed of changes that could affect their lives without diving into party-political debate.

We aim to approach these subjects with objectivity, focusing solely on the potential effects of these outcomes on expatriates and expat communities.

The above post, written by an Expat.com content writer, and monitored closely by our team does not mean to trigger debate on party politics in the US. It is to understand the state of mind of expats ahead of the elections, to understand how the outcome will affect their lives and their expat experience. We are not encouraging party politics and these posts will be moderated accordingly.

I understand that it is an extremely fine line, of course. And I am trying to find a way as the Editorial Manager to tackle policy subjects that are important to expats and party - and petty- politics. I really do welcome your feedback because this is far from being the most straightforward task !!!

Thank you and have a great day all!

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Please note that I had to remove some off-topic posts from this thread.

After discussion, we decided to close it, as the main goal was to gather as much information and feedback as possible for the editorial team to work with.

If you would still like to participate or provide further input, I encourage you to contact Ameerah directly via private message, and she will gladly assist you.

Thank you for your understanding.

Cheryl
