Hi everyone! I have just joined this community.

I'm Emi, and my husband Aviles. We are Americans but I am originally from Japan, currently live in Hawaii.

Egypt is my top of the retirement destinations list. We are going to make a second visit in April next year (2025) and planning to visit Cairo, Alex, Hurghada and Luxsor. I would appreciate if any retiree in this community sharing your story!

Hello and welcome !

Please note that I have created this new thread on the Egypt forum from your post so that members can share some feedback with you.

All the best

Wow, thank you!

EmiW

I'm serious about our retirement in Egypt! Probably in a couple of years.

OK, here is my first question... Do you drive on your own?

I currently drive in Hawaii but am scared in Egypt. I hope there are some areas you can live easy without your own car, OR area where you feel comfortable to drive.

Aloha!  Emi and Aviles; nice to meet you here!  If I may say so, you look rather young to retire :-)

I am a retired regular visitor in Egypt (and have good friends in both Hawaii and Japan) and will be pleased to answer any questions you may have either here on the forum or by private message (You can connect with me if you wish) but first two questions for you:

-    Why do you want to retire in Egypt?

-    How much do you know of the practicalities of living here?

Driving in Egypt:  Many people do but I don't because I don't like to drive in the crazy traffic and, in any event, there is no need to because both Uber and  Careem are very good and (relatively) very cheap.

Good luck!

Aloha CyMan! Nice to meet you.

My husband retired last year already and I want to as well  in a few years when I turn 60+.

Why do we want to retire in Egypt?

Hawaii is too pricy to live with our social security. Other than Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Belize and so on are in our list and probably we may hop around multiple places.

As you may notice, on top of low cost of living, we prefer warm climate, close to ocean and slow pace.

We traveled Egypt in last September and I fell in love with this country.

Thanks for your information about transportation. It sounds like easier than I thought!

I will appreciate if you share your recommendation of areas. We will travel again in next April and will visit Alexandria, Luxsor and Hurghada or Marsa Alam other than Cairo.

Yes; getting around using Uber or Careem is very easy and cheap.

Have you considered Malaysia to retire?  Warm, relatively inexpensive and, if you select your location, is very relaxed (like Penang, which is where I shall be next week :-) ).

Egypt is of course many fascinating countries in one :-)

Hi Emi - My husband and I are currently living and working in the US (We are both citizens) but will be moving back to Cairo in summer 2026 when we retire from our positions here in the States. We have an apartment in Maadi, Cairo and just returned from a two week visit at the end of September. It'd be great to connect with you and exchange thoughts and ideas!

Hi Laura, nice to meet you.

I appreciate you for sharing your personal plan. It sounds great and a kind of blowing my mind because I totally did not think about Cairo as our destination. We visited there and found that it was very crowded, noisy, busy and bad air. Reading your reply, I googled about Maadi then wow! it sounds like very different from other areas in Cairo. I want to visit Maadi to take a look around when we will travel next time!
