We have been storing my friends, senior art work from her time at Knox College and would like to bring it to Brazil. It is a mural on paper that is rolled up about 8 feet long on a cardboard tube. It weighs a little over 40 pounds. Can this be taken on an airplane? If not, what’s the best way to get it to Brazil??

It can be taken as what is classified as "oversized baggage" in your checked baggage. It is too long for a carry on.  Same as ski's or golf clubs, surf board, etc. Check with your airline for fees.

I was thinking that 8 ft was kinda long.

I would suggest making sure that the cardboard tube be supported by something strong to prevent it from being bent.  You may want to box the tube too.  I would add some weight but it has less chance of getting damaged.  Things - even marked fragile - are not guaranteed to be treated as such.

My friends ships his art works in well protected crates - and that's why he uses freight instead.  Not fast but will be received intact.  Can also be insured.

Good luck.

@Margaret Palmer I have a glass-enclosed YouTube Studio in my house. I brought the lighting gear inside a golf bag (bought in advance from Amazon. Com) as a check-in. If it becomes too expensive or unwieldly then DHL is the ONLY reliable and experienced shipper.
