Leaving Bulgaria with an unregistered car

Hi,

I've been in Bulgaria for more than one year and didn't know I needed to register my car. My car is really bad, and I plan to come back to my home country to sell it and get rid of it.

I'm wondering, if, when I will cross the border to leave the country, to authorities can see that I should have register my car and make me pay penalties for that, even if I want to leave the country and sell it?

Did it happen to one of you?

Thank you

JimJ

Is it insured and taxed?  If not, you're likely to hit problems between here and France...

THEDOORS

@JimJ

Insured and taxed from my home country but not Bulgaria.

I didn't know I needed to do it and have planned since long to bring it back to France to sell it.

All papers are valid and on date, just not from BG.

JimJ

And your contrôle technique is still in date?

THEDOORS

@JimJ

Yep until next year.

You're lucky that you're French, as your MOT is valid for 2 years. The Brit one is a measly year.

The main thing is that you have (for your country of registration) your registration/ownership document (Carte Grise?), a valid MOT (Controle Technique?), insurance, tax (exempt?), plus any relevant country vignettes. Then, if you get stopped by the police your paperwork is in order. If your car is "really bad" then that's a different issue, as the police can still decide your car isn't roadworthy even if your papers are valid. But this would typically be something obvious (bald tyres, missing lights, wipers that don't work, big chunk of bodywork missing because you had a prang, etc.) and they're unlikely to stop you just to look for problems.

As to the "authorities" I doubt they care about your stay here. The main border check is your ID, if they bother with your car at all it's to check what's in it and/or that you have your paperwork.

If any of your paperwork is out of date, and you can't remedy it (i.e. update your insurance online, buy an e-vignette online) then I suggest you reconsider driving it out of Bulgaria (or even much in Bulgaria). Cars without current MOTs are an especially bad idea (because this is taken as evidence of an unroadworthy vehicle).

Thank you a lot for your answer.

When I say my car is really bad, there's nothing physical, mechanical or visual about it. My car runs fine, but it's more problems like the fact that it starts one time out of 10 (probably a starter or alternator problem since I changed the battery last year)... Golf IV, if you know it, very robust but still problems here and there.

"As to the "authorities" I doubt they care about your stay here. The main border check is your ID, if they bother with your car at all it's to check what's in it and/or that you have your paperwork."

About that, you reassure me a lot.

That's what I was wondering mostly. If they will check just the main papers or if they will check in detailed, when did I entered, how long did I stay, and see that I should've registered my car here.

But even if, they will see that I'm leaving, so I don't think they will kind of force me to register my car before I leave (I hope lol).

The main thing is that you have a valid MOT, insurance, tax, and relevant vignettes.

Just another question, but when you say "tax", to what are you referring?

I guess I have it also; it's just that I don't get the name. It's simply the fact of having a license plate?

gwynj

@THEDOORS

Again, maybe you're lucky to be French / have a French-registered vehicle if you don't need tax. Many (most?) countries (including Bulgaria and UK) have an annual vehicle tax.

THEDOORS

Ah okay, no we don't have that then.

Thank you for your answer and your time again. :)
